COLUMBUS, Ohio – The NCAA Division I Women’s volleyball Committee awarded the Ohio State women’s volleyball team an at-large bid to the 64-team field. The Buckeyes were 27-3 overall and 17-3 in the Big Ten finishing in a tie for second in the conference were one of 16 teams that were seeded in the bracket ranking Ohio State fifth. Nebraska (27-1) was the top seed with Big Ten foes Penn State (27-2) seeded second and Minnesota (28-4) seeded fourth. Other Big Ten squads receiving at-large bids were Illinois (19-10), Purdue (16-14), Wisconsin (19-9) and Michigan (19-12).
Ohio State will host first and second round matches this week in St. John Arena. In matches scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4, Ohio State will host Dayton (23-8) and Ohio (28-2) will face Pittsburgh (21-10) in first round matches. Match times will be announced Monday. The winners return Saturday to play for a spot in the Minneapolis regional the following week.
This marks the 13th time Ohio State has made the NCAA Championship. The Buckeyes were last in the tournament in 2002. OSU has a 17-12 record in the NCAA Championship and has advanced to regional play nine times. In 1991 and 1994 the Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA National Championship semifinals before losing.
