Women’s Swimming & Diving Plays Host to Denison Friday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will play host to the Denison Big Red Friday at 6 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The squad is hoping to improve its unblemished home record of 3-0.
Last Time Out for Ohio State
The Buckeyes defeated Miami (Ohio) 148-95 last Saturday at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The team won 11 of 13 events.
Freshman Griet Buelens won the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,000-yard freestyle, scoring a season best times in both events. Nicole Maglich also won two individual events, taking both the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle events.
Other event winners for the meet included Linda Lund in the 50-yard freestyle, Rebekah Rychvalsky in the 100-yard breaststroke and Gulsah Gunenc took the 100-yard butterfly. Both Lund and Gunenc achieved season bests for the team with these times.
The Buckeye diving team took control in the diving well, sweeping the first three spots in the 1-meter and the first four spots in the 3-meter. Amber Simmons won the 1-meter event with a score of 272.02 while Julie Broms took the 3-meter with 311.78.
A Look at The Big Red
Denison University brings a 6-0 season and a first place finish at the NCAC relays as the team comes to Columbus. Jill Boo and Sarah Peck have won multiple events for the Big Red. Boo won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.99, while Peck took both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in the team’s win overCalvin, Case Western Reserve and Kalamazoo.
Last Time vs. Denison
The last time the Buckeyes swam against the Big Red was Jan. 29, 1999 with the Buckeyes winning 154-89 in the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
Buckeyes Fall to Reigning Big Ten Champs
The squad lost to Big Ten rival Michigan, 126-112, in Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 12. The team achieved several season best times throughout the meet in the many close races. Griet Buelens won the 200-yard butterfly event and obtained an NCAA B time for the second meet in a row with a time of 2:01.52. Rebekah Rychvalsky won in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.58. In the diving well, Julie Broms won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events. In the 3-meter event, the Buckeyes swept the first three spots, with Broms in first, Anesa Beard in second and Amber Simmons in third.
Buckeyes Swim Past Bearcats
The women’s swimming and diving team defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 167-92 Nov. 6. The Buckeyes won 11 of 14 events. Griet Buelens won the 100- and 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard butterfly and was on the winning relay team for the 800-yard freestyle relay. Buelens also met the 200-yard butterfly NCAA B time with a finishing time of 2:01.76, only 1.76 seconds away from the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center record. Nicole Maglich won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while Rebekah Rychvalsky won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke for the second meet in a row. Katie Kolles won the 100-yard backstroke for the second straight meet, and Gulsah Gunenc won in the 100-yard butterfly.
Buckeyes Win Every Event to Defeat The Falcons 206.5-93.5
Ohio State defeated Bowling Green 206.5-93.5 by winning every event in its season opener. The diving squad swept both the 1- and 3-meter events. Four Buckeyes were multiple-event winners. Nicole Maglich won the 100- and 1,000-yard freestyle and had the fastest split time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Rebekah Rychvalsky won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Also winning two events was Linda Lund taking the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly while Griet Buelens took wins in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. Other event winners in the meet were Katie Kolles, Samantha Johnson, Stephanie Fennell, Gulsah Gunenc, Ashley Bourland and Anesa Beard.
Scarlet vs. Gray Meet
The annual Scarlet and Gray meet was held Oct 22 at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The Scarlet team managed to have two swimmers win numerous events. In the exhibition meet Nicole Maglich won placed first in the 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Linda Lund won two events, the 50- and the 100-yard freestyle.
Coach Jeanne Fleck
Head women’s swimming coach Jeanne Fleck is in her sixth season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s swimming program. She has become accustomed to her teams displaying excellence in the water and in the classroom throughout her coaching career.
Fleck has geared the Buckeyes to one school record and two pool records while getting her student-athletes to set personal bests almost every week. The Buckeyes had the highest grade point average in the Big Ten conference and was ranked ninth in the country during fall quarter last year. In five seasons, Fleck has had 25 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 57 OSU Scholar-Athletes.

Vince Panzano is in his 27th year as coach of the Ohio State men’s and women’s diving teams. Panzano, who was named the 2004 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career, has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. Diving champions, ten NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up, 43 Big Ten champions and 66 NCAA All-Americans.
