COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will travel to the University of Michigan to open up their Big Ten season at 5 p.m. Friday for its first meet on the road. The Buckeyes will then return to the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center Saturday at 1 p.m. to play host to Miami (Ohio).
Last Time Out for Ohio State
The women’s swimming and diving team continued its season with a win over the Cincinnati Bearcats 167-92 Nov. 6. The Buckeyes won 11 of the 14 events.
Griet Buelens won the 100- and 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard butterfly and was on the winning relay team for the 800-yard freestyle relay. Buelens also met the 200-yard butterfly NCAA B time with a finishing time of 2:01.76, only 1.76 seconds away from the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center record. Nicole Maglich won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while Rebekah Rychvalsky won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke for the second meet in a row. Katie Kolles won the 100-yard backstroke for the second straight meet, and Gulsah Gunenc won in the 100-yard butterfly.
A Look at The Wolverines
Michigan is 1-1 heading into the meet. It also was fifth of eight teams at the Boilermaker Challenge and lost to Florida, 131-164, before rebounding to win 159-133 at Michigan State. Sophomore Susan Gilliam won multiple events and earning an NCAA A qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle. Kaitlyn Brady, also a sophomore, has three meets with three individual wins in the meet against Michigan State.
Last Time vs. The Wolverines
The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team was narrowly defeated by Michigan on Nov. 14, 2003 at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center 153.5-146.5.
With Michigan leading by three points going into the next to last event, Deanna Strunk took an early lead in the 400-yard individual medley and placed first with a season best time of 4:25.14. Liz Osterer and Stephanie Raezer took third and fourth, scoring a total of 14 points in the event to put the Buckeyes ahead 144.5-138.5. Head coach Jeanne Fleck immediately switched up her relay teams, spreading her talent in hopes of taking at least second and third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay to maintain the point lead.
Michigan, led by Susan Gilliam, held a short lead throughout the relay, with Ohio State going head-to-head for second place through the first half of the event. Ohio State finished only three seconds behind Michigan to take third and fourth place, giving up the dual meet win by only seven points.
Breaking a pool record set by Michigan at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center in 1994, Rebekah Rychvalsky won her third consecutive 200-yard breaststroke event with an NCAA B qualifying time of 2:18.79. Gulsah Gunenc also took her third consecutive win in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:03.26, setting a season’s best time.
Julie Broms continued her success with the Buckeyes, placing first in both the 1-meter dive with a score of 281.70 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 293.63, both NCAA zone diving qualifying marks.
A Look at the RedHawks
In the two meets the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks have competed in, they have dominated both. With wins over Buffalo 145-93 and Akron 177-120, Miami has started the season strong. Freshman Lauren Evanosky put herself in the Miami record books with the seventh highest time in Miami’s history in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.71. Miami will compete at home against Ball State Friday before traveling to Columbus for the Saturday meet.
Last Time vs. the RedHawks
Ohio State lost to Miami (Ohio) by a score of 172.50-127.50 at Oxford, Ohio Nov. 16, 2002.
Deanna Strunk kicked off the meet by placing first in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:06.42. She also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke with a team’s best time of 2:05.97.
Stephanie Raezar placed second in four evnts. She placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:21.84 and finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.58. In addition, she placed second in the 200-yard breastroke and was a member of the second place 400-yard medley relay, which had a time of 3:56.78.
Kylie Lancken placed first in two events and second in two events. She placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.13 and participated on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team with a time of 3:38.38. In addition, she placed second in the 100 fly and participated on the 400-yard medley relay team that took second place.
Amanda Treleaven also posted a win for the Buckeyes, taking victory in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.20.
In diving, Jillian Cicione placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 236.32 and placed second in the 3-meter dive with 256.35.
Buckeyes Win Every Event to Defeat The Falcons 206.5-93.5
Ohio State defeated Bowling Green Oct. 28 by winning every event in its season opener. The diving squad swept both the 1- and 3-meter events.
Four Buckeyes were multiple event winners. Nicole Maglich won the 100- and 1,000-yard freestyle and had the fastest split time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Rebekah Rychvalsky won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Also winning two events was Linda Lund taking the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly while Griet Buelens took wins in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle.
Other event winners in the meet were Katie Kolles, Samantha Johnson, Stephanie Fennell, Gulsah Gunenc, Ashley Bourland, and Anesa Beard.
Scarlet vs. Gray Meet
The annual Scarlet and Gray meet was held Oct 22 at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The Scarlet team managed to have two swimmers win numerous events. In the exhibition meet Nicole Maglich won placed first in the 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Linda Lund won two events, the 50- and the 100-yard freestyle.
Coach Jeanne Fleck
Head women’s swimming coach Jeanne Fleck is in her sixth season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s swimming program. She has become accustomed to her teams displaying excellence in the water and in the classroom throughout her coaching career.
Fleck has geared the Buckeyes to one school record and two pool records while getting her student-athletes to set personal bests almost every week. The Buckeyes had the highest grade point average in the Big Ten conference and was ranked ninth in the country during fall quarter last year. In five seasons, Fleck has had 25 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 57 OSU Scholar-Athletes.

Vince Panzano is in his 27th year as coach of the Ohio State men’s and women’s diving teams. Panzano, who was named the 2004 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career, has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. Diving champions, ten NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up, 43 Big Ten champions and 66 NCAA All-Americans.
