Ohio State Track and Field Dominates Field at OSU Invite – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field team concluded its three-meet home stand, Saturday afternoon at the non-team scoring, Ohio State Invitational at French Field House. The Buckeyes who competed teams throughout Ohio, Illinois and Indiana, dominated the field as both men’s and women’s team combined to post 20 first-place finishes.
The Ohio State throws squad once again led the Buckeyes as reigning Big Ten athlete of the year Dan Taylor (Sr., Middlefield, Ohio) continued to dominate the throw events for the men as he posted his sixth and seventh first-place scores of the season in the shot put and in the weight throw. Although Taylor did not eclipse his season best throw of 66-6.5 in the shot put, he still managed to post an NCAA automatic qualifying throw of 65-10 to win the event. Taylor followed his strong performance in the shot with an NCAA automatic throw in the weight with a toss of 76-00.
On the women’s side, junior Keturah Lofton (Zanesville, Ohio) who provisionally qualified in the weight throw with a 64-3 effort the previous week automatically qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships with a throw of 65-01 to win the event. Lofton joins fellow Buckeyes Ukabam and Taylor who also have qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships.
Teammate Amarachi Ukabam (So., Creve Couer, Mo.) helped the Buckeyes sweep the throw events as she posted a first-place effort in the shot put throw with a throw of 52-09.
In other field events, the Buckeyes received strong performances from a pair of OSU pole vaulters in senior Becky Heintz and sophomore Robyn Mroz, who each set an Ohio State record in the event by topping the field with 11-11.75.
Also contributing in the field were Rosalind Goodwin (Jr., Louisville, Ken.) and Shayla Moore (Jr., Jessup, Md.), both of whom provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships. Goodwin finished first in the event with a leap of 42-02, while Moore placed second with jump of 42-01. Goodwin also finished first in the long jump as she posted a season best jump 20-11.
Nosa Ehimwenman (Sr., Homewood, Ill.) posted a first-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 50-6. Senior Billy Mills (Fairlawn, Ohio) recorded his third first-place mark of the season in the high jump, with a leap of 6-8. Seth MacCarter (Jr., Chillicothe, Ohio) posted another strong performance for the Buckeyes as he cleared 15-11 to take first-place in the pole vault. Becky Heintz (Sr., Sidney, Ohio) notched a season best mark in the pole vault with a jump of 11-11.
In the distance events, Rob Myers (Sr., Rushville, Ohio) missed his indoor record by half a second as he posted a time of 2:23.90 to capture first in the 1,000-meter run. Joe Gourley (So., Uniontown, Ohio) placed first in the 600-meter run as he clocked a time of 1:21.60. Brian Olinger (Jr., Fresno, Ohio) posted a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:45.8.
The sprint events featured contributions from Jenna Harris (Somerset, N.J.) who clocked a time of 7.55 to win the women’s 60-meter dash. Harris also clocked a 24.90 to win the 200-meter dash. On the men’s side, John Morris (Jr., Camden, N.J.) placed first in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.26.
The Buckeyes concluded the event as both men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay squads finished first posting times of 3:19.46 and 3:50.85 respectfully.
The Buckeyes return to action Feb. 6-7 in Bloomington, Ind. to compete in the Indiana Invitational.
