Women’s Swimming & Diving Defeat Iowa 225.5-126.5, Narrowly Fall to Illinois 178.5-174.5 – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team defeated Iowa 225.5-126.5, while narrowly losing to Illinois 178.5-174.5 Saturday at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The Buckeyes exchanged the lead several times with the Fighting Illini, entering the last event ahead by five points.
Entering the last event, the Buckeyes led 214-165 over Iowa and held first place with five points over Illinois. The Buckeyes swam head-to-head with the Illini for first place in the final event, missing the win by 67 one-hundredths of one second and taking second-place with a time of 1:36.67 in the 200-yard freestyle medley.
At the beginning of the meet, the Buckeyes placed second in the 200-yard medley relay and Deanna Strunk (So., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) missed second-place in the 1,000-yard freestyle by four one-hundredths of one second with a time of 10:16.09. Strunk came back two events later to place second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.24, after which Rebekah Rychvalsky (Fr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill) also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.32. The Buckeyes earned a 1-2-4 finish in the 200-yard butterfly, with Gulsah Gunenc (Fr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) winning with a time of 2:04.00, while Katie Severson (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) pushed ahead of Illinois’ Barbie Viney in the 50-yard freestyle and won with a time of 24.38.
The meet was split into two sessions. After 11 events, the Buckeyes led at the end of the first session 104-101 over Illinois and 123-81 over Iowa.
Starting the second session strong, Ohio State placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a season-best time of 3:30.02 and second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:51.24. Nicole Maglich (So., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.61, with Stephanie Raezer (Sr., Newark, Del./Glasgow) and Lindsay Goodson (Sr., San Ramon, Calif./Carondelet) adding points with third- and fifth-place finishes. Kylie Lancken (Jr., Pymble, Australia/ Ravenswood) tied for first in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:04.44, with Steph Fennell (Fr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District) backing her in third place. Rychvalsky finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.50, while Severson narrowly missed first place by less than one second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.92 and Gunenc led in the 2-4-5 Buckeye finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.65.
The Buckeyes had a 1-3-5 finish in the 400-yard individual medley, with Strunk winning with a time of 4:24.41. Strunk returned to the pool for the last individual event for a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.
The diving squad took first through third place in both diving events, adding 34 points to the Buckeye total. Amber Simmons (Fr., Sparks, Md./Hereford) won the 1-meter dive with a season-best score of 302.40 and Julie Broms (Fr., Springfield, Ill./North Central[Ind.]) won the 3-meter dive with a season-best score of 333.40. Anesa Beard (Fr., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) placed third in the 1-meter with a score of 267.65, allowing her to join Broms, Simmons and Ashley Bourland (Fr., Conroe, Texas/Montgomery) on the list of NCAA diving qualifiers for the season in the 1-meter dive.
“Everybody played a part and came back strong for the second session,” Jeanne Fleck, women’s head swimming coach, said. “It was great to try a double-session meet and everyone ended up doing a great job.”
The Buckeyes travel to East Lansing, Mich. Friday to continue Big Ten competition against Michigan State at the Charles McCaffree Pool.
