COLUMBUS, Ohio – With career-highs of 20 kills from Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) and 14 from Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) and a team-high 23 kills from All-American Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario), the 18th (tie) ranked Ohio State (1-0) women’s volleyball team defeated the Cardinals of Ball State (0-4), 3-1 (30-23, 30-26, 28-30, 30-18) Wednesday night in St. John Arena to open the season for the Buckeyes. Cardinal Sarah Obras scored a match-high 24 kills with Stephanie Bacan adding 10 for Ball State.
OSU broke a six-all tie in game one with a block by former Buckeye basketball standout D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) and Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.). Back-to-back blocks by Shackleford and Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) gave OSU a 9-6 lead. OSU went on to a 30-23 win, hitting .294 to .057 for the Cardinals.
Two Gordon kills and a BSU error gave OSU a 3-0 lead in game two and the Buckeyes never trailed in the game. The Buckeyes hit .356 for the game to .176 for Ball State. OSU’s Gordon, Miller and Grant each had six kills in the game.
Game three was tied at 11 before kills by Obras and Stacie Baldwin gave Ball State a 13-11 lead. The Cardinals held the lead going on to a 30-28 win. Ball State hit .308 for the game with Obras scoring a game-high nine kills, while OSU hit .205 with Gordon collecting eight kills.
From a one-all tie in game four, OSU scored the next four points off two Grant kills and two Cardinal errors to take a 5-1 lead. At 7-2, two ace serves by Gordon opened a 9-2 margin. OSU held the lead and won the game, 30-18, to win the match, three games to one. The Buckeyes hit .414 for the game to .030 for Ball State. OSU’s Gordon collected four ace serves in the game. Ohio State hit .309 for the match to .149 for Ball State. The Buckeyes had a 71-49 margin in kills in the contest. OSU had a 7-3 advantage in ace serves with Gordon collecting six. The Buckeyes had a 53-51 margin in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a team-high 17 with Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) adding a career-high 15. At the net, Ohio State had a 12 to six margin in team blocks. Buckeye Shackleford had a match-high seven with one solo and six assists.
The Buckeyes continue the season-opening homestand with semifinal matches of the Buckeyes Classic this Friday. Georgia Tech (3-0) faces Temple (0-3) at 5 p.m. with Ohio State hosting Western Michigan (2-1) at 7 p.m. The consolation and championship matches will take place on Sunday with the Buckeyes slated to play in the 2 p.m. match. The first match of the day is at noon.
