Women’s Volleyball Defeats Bowling Green, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-2) women’s volleyball squad, behind career-block highs of nine (2 solo, 7 assists) from D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) and eight (8 assists) by Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) swept the Falcons of Bowling Green (8-4), 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-27) Saturday night in St. John Arena in front of 1,052 fans. Offensively, OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a match-highs of 19 kills and 14 digs in the contest. BG’s Samantha Rennau scored a team-high 11 kills for the Falcons.
From a 14-all tie in game one, two Buckeye errors and a Rennau kill gave Bowling Green a 17-14 lead. OSU responded with three kills from Gordon, one from Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.), two Falcon errors and a block by Whalen and Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) to open up a 21-17 lead. A Grant kill closed out the game for the Buckeyes at 30-26. Ohio State hit .132 for the game to .054 for Bowling Green.
Bowling Green held an early 12-10 lead in game two. Tied at 17, kills from Shackleford and Miller, two from Gordon, an ace serve by Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) and a Falcon error gave OSU a 23-17 lead. The Buckeyes held a 28-25 lead when kills from Shackleford and Miller ended the game at 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .438 for the game to .200 for the Falcons.
Tied at 10 in game three, Bowling Green outscored OSU, 7-3, to take a 17-13 lead. OSU responded to tie the game at 19 with a Gordon kill. After three ties, the last at 25, the Buckeyes regained the lead with a Gordon kill at 26-25. An ace serve by Whalen made it 27-25, OSU, as the Falcons called time out. Melissa Mohr, with a kill, cut the OSU lead to 27-26. Back-to-back kills from Gordon made it match point at 29-26. Falcon Dana Chapman stopped the first match point with a kill at 29-27. OSU’s Gordon’s 19th kill of the match ended the game at 30-27, giving the Buckeyes a 3-0 victory. OSU hit .237 for the game to .091 for Bowling Green.
For the match, the Buckeyes hit .259 to .104 for Bowling Green. OSU had a 50-32 advantage in kills and outserved the Falcons, 3-1. Ohio State gave up 14 service errors to 12 for Bowling Green. Defensively, Ohio State had a 46-30 margin in digs. OSU’s Gordon had match-high honors with 14 with Buckeye Kastein picking up 10 to equal her season-high. At the net, Ohio State had a 14 to seven advantage in blocks. Buckeye Shackleford recorded a match-career-high nine blocks with two solos and seven assists. OSU’s McCarthy added eight assist for a career high.
Ohio State’s Gordon, with 19 kills, now has 1,448 career kills and has moved to third on OSU’s career list passing Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) with 1,434 and Lisa Bettio (1982-85) with 1,442. Gordon needs 16 kills to move to second, currently held by Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 1,463. Gordon’s 14 digs moves her to 20th on the OSU career list, passing Audrey DiPronio (1988-90) with 850. She continued her streak of double-figure kill match and now has 56 consecutive. The match was the first time this season she has not scored at least 20 kills in the match.
Ohio State begins Big Ten Conference action next weekend when they travel for a 7 p.m. contest at Michigan Friday and an 8:00 p.m. match at Michigan State Saturday.
