Women’s Volleyball Aced By Brigham Young, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (3-2) women’s volleyball did not serve an ace and gave up 14 aces to Brigham Young (5-3) in a 3-1 (23-24, 30-28, 30-23, 30-26) loss to the Cougars in the Mizuno Classic in Provo, Utah. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored match-highs of 22 kill and 21 digs for the Buckeyes with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding a career-high 16 kills. BYU’s Kimberly Wilson scored a team-high 13 kills with Carrie Bowers and April Varner adding 11 each.
Ohio State held an early 8-4 in game one. Brigham Young took their first lead at 20-19 and held it until a Cougar error tied the game at 23. After nine ties, the last at 32, kills by Whalen and Gordon gave the Buckeyes a 34-32 win. Ohio State hit .080 for the game to .061 for Brigham Young.
In game two, Brigham Young took a 21-20 lead off a Buckeye error. The Cougars reached game point at 29-27, but kills by Whalen and McCarthy cut the BYU lead to 29-28 before a Buckeye service error ended the game at 30-28 and tie the match at one game each. Despite losing the game, Ohio State outhit the Cougars, .286 to .250.
Brigham Young took a quick 5-0 lead and never trailed to win game three, 30-23. The Cougars hit .467 to OSU’s .353.
In game four, which remained close, OSU broke a 17-all tie with a Whalen kill and two BYU errors to lead 20-17. The Cougars outscored the Buckeyes, five to two to tied the game at 22. Tied at 23, Brigham Young scored four straight points to lead 27-23. At 28-26, Brigham Young scored a kill and a block to win the game, 30-26, winning the match, 3-1.
For the match, Brigham Young outhit Ohio State, .167 to .164. The Buckeyes did have a 62-54 advantage in kills. BYU had a 14-0 advantage in aces while OSU gave up 12 errors to 17 for the Cougars. The Buckeyes had a 63-55 margin in digs while Brigham Young outblocked OSU, 15 to 10. OSU’s Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) recorded a career-high 50 assists while BYU’s Lauren Richards had 41. The Buckeyes will play Rice (6-3) at 7 p.m. ET Saturday.
