Columbus, Ohio – A trio of Buckeyes earned berths Thursday to the final round of their respective events at the 2003 Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championships held at California State University – Sacramento. Hurdler Joel Brown advanced for the second-consecutive day in the 110-meter event as he will assume lane 9 in the finals with his time of 13.74.
Junior Dan Taylor, who placed second in the men’s shot put qualifier Thursday, joined Brown as he qualified for the finals in his second event with a 186-6 figure in the discus.
Two Buckeyes competed in the jump events as sophomore Shayla Moore claimed the final spot in Saturday’s triple jump preliminaries with a 42-5.25, while five-time Big Ten champion Tami Smith fell shy of a finals bid with her leap of 5-7.25. Smith closes her career as the top women’s high jumper in Ohio State program history.
Two other Buckeyes competed on the women’s side of the throw events as sophomore Keturah Lofton and freshman Amarachi Ukabam took action in the prelims of the hammer throw and shot put, respectively. Lofton narrowly missed an opportunity to throw in the finals as she missed the last qualifying spot by just 10 inches. Lofton placed 13th with a 190-7. The Top 12 marks advance to the finals. Ukabam also missed a bid to the championship round as she posted a 46-11 in the women’s shot put prelims.
In the women’s hurdles, Ohio State senior Molly Logan timed a 13.69 in the 100-meter event, but failed to advance to the finals.
Competing in championship rounds Friday will be junior long jumper Drew Carter at 9:45 p.m. EDT and Taylor, who will vie for a championship and his second All-America honor of 2003 in the shot put at 10:30 p.m. EDT.
