Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State senior distance runner Derrick Butler was named Verizon Second Team Academic All-American Friday. The 2003 Big Ten Champion in the 10,000-meters carried a 3.89 grade point average in chemical engineering. Butler graduated Friday at Ohio State’s commencement celebration in Ohio Stadium.
Butler, an Academic District IV honoree, was one of 12 finalists for the Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is given annually at each institution in the conference to the male and female athletes of the graduating class who have attained the greatest proficiency in both academic and athletics.
The award culminates a stellar senior season for Butler in both track and field and cross country, where Butler helped the Buckeyes to their second NCAA cross country championship appearance in three years, while earning the 2002 Division I Ohio Cross Country Runner of the Year award. Butler also posted a strong season on the track as he captured first place in the 10,000-meter run at the 2003 Big Ten Championships and qualified for regional competition in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter events.
