Columbus, Ohio – The inaugural running of the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships concluded with Saturday’s second day of events at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Regional championship teams were decided as Arkansas took the men’s title with 73.0 total points, while fellow Southeastern Conference foe Auburn took second with 68.0 points. The host Buckeyes tied fellow Big Ten member Purdue with 43.0 points. The women’s side was well represented by the SEC and Big Ten conferences as the leagues took the top seven spots. Eventual winner LSU, accumulated 95.0 team points, besting Big Ten Champ Michigan, which tallied 62.0 points. Ohio State staked sixth with score of 40.50.
The throw squad served as one of the event highlights for Ohio State Saturday as freshman Amarachi Ukabam, who qualified Friday in the shot put, was crowned regional champion in the women’s discus with a throw of 171-2. Also qualifying on the women’s side was senior Krista Keir, who took third behind Ukabam with a 163-9 in the discus, and sophomore Keturah Lofton, who placed fourth in the hammer throw at 191-9.
Junior Dan Taylor once again led the men’s side as he scored his third national qualifier with a second place finish in the men’s shot pot with a 67-0.50. Taylor’s qualifier in the shot joins his second place score in Friday’s discus and third in the hammer event.
On the track, the closest race of the day featured senior Joel Brown representing host Ohio State in the men’s 110-meter hurdles as he narrowly was edged at the finish line by just .01 by Michael Thomas of Arkansas. Thomas moves onto the region with his 13.57, while Brown clocked a 13.58. Fellow hurdler Molly Logan earned a bid to the national meet with a 13.03 in the 100-meter hurdles to place third. Both Logan and Brown scored personal-records in the events.
Sophomore Shayla Moore rounded out the Ohio State national qualifying contingent as she placed fourth in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 13.11 meters.
In all, eight Buckeyes qualified for the national meet at California State University June 11-14.
