Columbus, Ohio – Day one of the first-ever NCAA Mideast Regional Track and Field Championships concluded Friday evening at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Numerous Ohio State venue records fell as athletes competed from 150 schools spanning from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
Ohio State All-American thrower Dan Taylor was one of three Buckeyes to advance to the NCAA Championships in June as he placed second in the men’s discus with an Ohio State record mark of 193-7. The 2003 Big Ten Male Athlete of the year also qualified in the hammer throw with a third place 209-9.
Joining Taylor as qualifiers to the national meet were junior long jumper Drew Carter, who claimed second with a career-best 26-3.50, and freshman Amarachi Ukabam, a fourth place finisher in the women’s shot put with a career-best 51-6.50.
Several other Buckeyes advanced to Saturday’s final with qualifying efforts in the preliminary rounds. Included in that group was senior hurdler Joel Brown, who posted a 13.84 to move on. Fellow hurdler Molly Logan topped her heat with a career-best 13.11. Logan will assume the sixth position in Saturday’s final.
Brown also contributed to a season-best mark by the Ohio State 4×100-meter relay team as he anchored the squad to a 40.37. Brown was joined by juniors Drew Carter and Michael Jenkins and sophomore Greg Norman, who ran the lead leg. Distance runner Rob Myers also advanced with a personal record 3:48.01in the 1,500-meter run.
The Ohio State men stand in second with 23 points behind Auburn, which tallied 28. The Ohio State women claim 15th place after day one.
