Three Track and Field Buckeyes Named District IV Academic All-Americans – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – A trio of Ohio State track and field student-athletes were deemed District IV Verizon Academic All-Americans for their efforts in the 2003 season. The three, distance runners Derrick Butler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sjaan Gerth (Jr., Belgrout, Ont., Canada) and thrower Krista Keir, a senior from Westerville, Ohio, also will compete in this weekend’s NCAA Mideast Regional Track and Field Championships at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday and Saturday.
Butler, the 2003 Big Ten champion in the 10,000-meters, was awarded for his outstanding academic status with a 3.89 grade point average in chemical engineering, while Gerth joined Butler as a first team honoree as he was recognized for his 3.91 grade point average in bio-chemistry/ biology. Gerth is a regional qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Butler will compete in both the 10,000m and 5,000m events.
Keir, the OSU record-holder in the discus with a career-best 186-1, also earned recognition with her 4.00 GPA in sports and leisure studies.
Both Butler and Keir were candidates for the 2003 Big Ten Medal of Honor, which recognizes the male and female athletes of the graduating class who have attained the greatest proficiency in both academic and athletics.
All three will be in action at Ohio State Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium starting Friday at noon. Competition will run through Saturday with the sprint finals set for the evening hours.
