Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded day two of the 2003 Big Ten Championships Saturday at Bierman Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Ohio State men used day two to claim second place heading into Sunday’s final day of competition. The women were fueled by a championship performance from junior Nicholette Chambers in the pentathlon to earn a tie with Purdue for fifth place with 29 team points. The men trail only Minnesota (58.5 points) with 50 team points.
Chambers, the 2003 indoor conference champ in the heptathlon, added a second title completing the event with 4, 982 points to best Purdue’s Shanna Carter by 45 points. Chambers recorded first place finishes in the 100-meter dash and 800-meter run and combined those performances with second place marks in the 200-meter dash, long jump and high jump.
Leading the way for men, was junior thrower Dan Taylor as he posted a mark 175-8 in the discus to finish second, his second Top 5 finish during the Big Ten championships.
Also scoring All-Big Ten second place performances was junior runner Aaron Fisher, who placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase clocking a personal best 8:48.23. Fellow distance man Sjaan Gerth joined Fisher in the steeple with a fourth place 8:58.73.
Numerous other Buckeyes scored Top 5 finishes, highlighted by Keturah Lofton, who placed fourth in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 189-11, while fellow thrower Erin Carter posted a third place United State Track and Field Championships qualifying and career-best mark of 51-9.25. In the long jump, Rosalind Goodwin took fourth with a season-best and regional qualifying 19-5.50. The men also scored points in the jump events as juniors Drew Carter and Billy Mills supplied third and fourth place finishes in the long jump and high jump, respectively. Carter, also a member of the men’s 4×100-meter relay squad, leapt a season-best 24-7.75 to claim third, while Mills also posted a season mark with a 6-11 fourth place effort in the high jump. Both Mills and Carter’s marks are regional qualifiers.
Saturday also marked the trials for the sprint events as Ohio State sent three representatives to both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles on the women’s side as Brandi Hogan, Molly Logan and Dalanda Jackson earned bids to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles, while Hogan and Logan will join Chambers in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. Also scoring finals berths in multiple events were sprinters Joel Brown and Greg Norman. Brown will take action in the 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash, while Norman will run in the finals of the 100-meter dash and the 200m. John Morris qualified for the finals of the 400-meter run, while Rob Myers scored a berth into the 800-meter finals.
Day three of the 2003 Big Ten Championships will resume tomorrow with the women’s triple jump at 11:40 a.m.
