Women’s Tennis Defeated by Virginia in NCAA Opening Round – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team concluded the 2003 season with a first round loss in the NCAA championship vs. Virginia, 4-0, Saturday at the UT Varsity Courts in Knoxville, Tenn. The No. 34 Cavaliers 16-9) will face No. 8 Tennessee at 1 p.m. Sunday at the same venue for a spot in the Round of 16.
In doubles, the Buckeye duo of Meaghan Colville (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) and Lindsey Adams (So., Mercer Island, Wash.) won the first match from the No. 3 spot vs. Lauren Bruch and Kyle Montgomery, 8-5. The Cavilers, who has nationally ranked doubles teams at Nos. 1 and 2, bounced back with a victory at No. 2 and clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 1.
Virginia clinched the match with three straight-set victories at Nos. 4, 3 and 2, respectively.
No. 49 Ohio State finished the season with a fifth-consecutive NCAA championship appearance, a 12-12 record and a 6-4 Big Ten tally. The Buckeyes kept it close all season with 16 matches decided by a 4-3 score and Ohio State claiming victory in half of them. The Buckeyes found success in pairs as they clinched the doubles point and took the 1-0 lead in every match except five. Ohio State played 18 matches vs. ranked opponents and came out 6-12 vs. the nation’s best. Spending most of the season on the road, Ohio State was 7-10 as visitors and 5-2 at home.
Sadhaf Pervez (Sr., Warren, N.J.), the lone senior on the Buckeye line up, finished her Ohio State career ranked No. 3 in career wins with 99 total victories tallied (No. 1 Kristy Dascoli 104, No. 2 Monica Rincon 101). Pervez racked up 27 wins in the 2002-03 campaign, which tied her effort last season and ranks No. 6 in single season wins. Playing from the No. 1 spot, Pervez had a 17-5 record and earned All Big-Ten honors for her performance.
