Track and Field Concludes Regular Season In Akron – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field team concluded the 2003 regular season Saturday at the non-team scoring Campbell/Wright Open in Akron, Ohio. The University of Akron played host to the event at the Lee Jackson Track And Field Complex. During competition Ohio State received yet another strong performance from both men’s and women’s throwing squads to commence the day’s activities.
Junior thrower Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio) continued his solid season heading into the Big Ten championships with a throw of 190-10 in the discus to set a new Ohio State record. Taylor’s throw in the discus smashed his previous mark of 187-4, which he set back on April 5 at the Ohio State relays.
Rusty Azbell (Sr., Lancaster, Ohio) and Jon Norman (Sr., Kent, Ohio) also posted strong showings in the men’s hammer throw finishing seventh and eighth. Azbell posted a throw of 181-05 while Norman posted a throw of 180-03 to qualify for the NCAA regional championships.
The women’s throwing squad was led by Krista Keir (Sr., Westerville, Ohio), who placed first in the women’s shot put and discus posting throws of 50-11 in the shot put and 183-09 in the discus. Keir’s throw in the discus set a new stadium mark. The women also received strong performances from Alexis McCall (Jr., Elyria, Ohio), Amrachi Ukabam (Fr., Creve Coeur, Mo.) and Erin Carter (Sr., Logan, Ohio) all of whom placed in the Top 5 in the women’s shot put.
In other field events the men received strong performances from Billy Mills (Jr., Fairlawn, Ohio) and Nosa Ehimwenman (Jr., Homewood, Ill.). Mills posted his best jump of the season as he finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6-09.7. Ehimwenman posted two first place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. With his leap of 24-00.25 in the long jump, Ehimwenman qualified for the NCAA regional championships.
On the women’s side, Tami Smith (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) finished first in the high jump with a leap of 5-09.25. Smith’s first place finish in the high jump marked the second straight week in a row she has won the high jump since returning from a back injury.
In the running events, Brandi Hogan (Jr., Pittsburgh, Penn.) led the women with a first place finish in the 100-meter high hurdles and a second place finish in the 200-meter dash. On the men’s side, freshman Dana Howard (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles and fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Robyn Mroz and Becky Heintz each tallied a Ohio State record-setter in the women’s pole vault as both marked an 11-11.75 to eclipse the previous standard of 11-7.75.
Up Next Ohio State will compete for the 2003 Big Ten Championships at the University of Minnesota Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18.
