No. 10 Women’s Lacrosse Wins ‘Outright’ American Lacrosse Championship With A 15-9 Victory Over Ohio University – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ten-ranked Ohio State (13-3 overall, 5-1 American Lacrosse Conference), with a 15-9 victory over Ohio University (5-10, 1-5) captured the ‘outright’ American Lacrosse Championship Thursday night in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The ‘outright’ championship is due to the wording of the bylaws of the Conference. Despite finishing tied with Penn State (5-1) in the conference standings, the Buckeyes win the championship based on the listed criteria of head-to-head competition with Penn State to determine the champion. Last Sunday, Ohio State defeated Penn State, 10-9, for its only loss in conference play.
OSU’s Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) scored a season-high five goals in leading the Buckeyes to the win over Ohio University. Buckeye Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) added three goals and KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) and Brandie Williams (So., Hatboro, Pa.) scoring two each. Bobcat Lindsey Hart (Sr., Vineland, Ontario) had a team-high three goals with Becky Oxman (Jr., Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Lynz Keys (Jr., Whitby, Ontario) adding two each.
The Bobcats opened the score at 3:30 with a Kristen Gombeski (So., Finksburg, Md.) goal, assisted by Oxman. OSU tied the game at one with a goal by Oliver at 3:43, assisted by Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.). Bounds, at 4:50, gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead on a free position attempt. Oliver made it 3-1 with a score at 10:18. OSU’s Weatherill scored the next two goals, the first at 10:25 assisted by Carter and the second at 10:45, assisted by Bounds to open a 5-1 lead. Ohio University, at 12:51, cut the margin to 5-2 on a Keys goal. Oliver, with an assist from Bounds, scored at 15:53. On a free position attempt at 20:04, Shannon Wilson scored to make the lead 7-2. Weatherill, at 20:25 and 22:09 scored unassisted goals. Williams scored at 23:24 with an assist from Bounds to make the lead eight. OU’s Hart, on a free position attempt, scored at 25:00. Williams followed that with a free position score at 26:50. The Bobcats ended the scoring in the half at 27:15 with a goal by Alyssa Trocher (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.), assisted by Melissa Menna (Jr., Downingtown, Pa.)
The second half started with Taryn Bowen (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) in goal for Ohio State, replacing starter Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio). Ohio State opened the scoring at 31:41 with a Carter goal, assisted by Bounds. Ohio University responded with three quick goals, the first at 32:50 by Oxman, assisted by Hart. Oxman scored again at 33:42 on a free position attempt and Keys added her second goal at 34:10 to cut the OSU lead to 12-7. At 35:36 Forquer returned to the goal as the Buckeyes began a three-goal run. Weatherill scored her fifth goal of the game at 39:34, unassisted. Carter added her second goal at 45:27 and Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored at 48:43 to give OSU a 15-7. OSU’s Kim Hastings (Fr., Sewickley, Pa) replace Forquer at 45:27 to close out the game in goal. The Bobcats added two late goals by Hart, at 50:00 and 53:09, to close out the scoring for a 15-9 Ohio State win.
Ohio University’s Jen Cassidy (Jr., Whitby, Ontario) took the loss in goal giving up 15 goals and recording 10 saves. OSU’s Forquer played 39:51 while recording six saves and giving up four goals. Bowen played 5:36 and gave up three goals while Hastings played 14:33, recording one save and giving up two goals
