Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field team commenced the 2003 outdoor season as it played host to the Ohio State Relays Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in blustery 40-degree conditions. Seven Buckeyes qualified for the 2003 NCAA Regional Championships, which are set to be held May 30 and 31 at Ohio State.
For the second-straight week OSU thrower Dan Taylor established an Ohio State record with a 205-7 in the hammer to best his 204-10 effort last week at the Arizona State Invitational. Taylor coupled that performance with another OSU record mark in the discus with a 187-4, besting his 182-0 standard set last season. Both efforts qualify Taylor for regional competition.
Elsewhere in the throws, Ohio State claimed a 1-2 finish in the women’s shot put as freshman Amarachi Ukabam scored a career-best 49-7, while senior Erin Carter joined Ukabam with a regional qualifying mark of 47-9.25 to finish second. Ukabam added a second first place effort later in the day after scoring a qualifying 159-6 in the discus, while three Buckeyes scored qualifying marks in the women’s hammer throw as OSU claimed second through fourth place. Sophomore Keturah Lofton took second with a career-best 184-4, while fellow sophomore Shelaine Larson (174-8) and senior Katy Houser (168-10) added their third and second qualifying marks of the year for third and fourth place.
Also in the throw events, senior two-time Big Ten Champion javelin thrower George Hoover took second with a 204-5 as he qualified for regionals for the third time in as many events.
In the jumps, Ohio State sophomore Shayla Moore posted a first place 17-5.25 performance in the long jump and added a 40-0 regional qualifying effort to top the field in the triple jump, while senior Tami Smith added a first place effort in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5-5. Junior Nosa Ehimwenman placed second with a 22-7in the long jump.
