COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State (7-2, 2-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad returns to conference action in the ALC when the Buckeyes play at Davidson (0-9, 0-2) at 1 p.m., Sun., April 6.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Sue Stimmel coaches the Buckeyes. Ohio State has a 7-2 overall record and is 2-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference. OSU is ranked 10th in the IWLCA poll this week. In home contests last week, Ohio State defeated ninth-ranked North Carolina, 10-8, and lost to second-ranked Maryland, 10-5. Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) is OSU’s top goal scorer with 21. Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) is second with 17 and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) tied for third with 12. Oliver has a team-high seven assists with Wilson second with six. Oliver has team-highs in ground balls with 45, caused turnovers with 28 and draw controls with 26. In goal, Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) is 7-1 with a 6.22 goals against average and a .588 saves percentage.
A LOOK AT DAVIDSON
Mary Schwart coaches the Wildcats. Davidson is 0-9 overall and is 0-2 in the ALC. Davidson suffered losses against William & Mary (14-3), Towson (10-5) and Duquesne (10-5) last week. The Wildcats host Ohio University Friday prior to playing the Buckeyes Sunday. Wildcat Becca McDevitt has scored a team-high eight goals this season. Whitney Diefendorf and Loren Seaton are tied for second with seven goals each. Eloise Grose has a team-high eight assists and leads the team with 14 points (6-8). Emily Rice leads the team with 28 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers. McDevitt has a team-high 21 draw controls. In goal Becca Nussbaum has an 11.3 goals against average and a 47.4 saves percentage. THE SERIES WITH DAVIDSON
Ohio State has a 4-2 advantage in the series with Davidson. The Buckeyes have won the last four meetings. The first game was in 1996, a 10-8 Wildcat win. In 1997, OSU lost 8-6 at home. The Buckeyes picked up a 16-7 win at Davidson in 1998. Playing in Columbus, Ohio State won 10-9 in overtime in 1999. Playing at OSU, the Buckeyes won 13-10 in 2000 and 23-3 in 2002.
OSU SETS WIN STREAK WITH VICTORY OVER NORTH CAROLINA
Ohio State’s 10-8 victory over ninth-ranked North Carolina was the seventh consecutive win for the Buckeyes after a season opening loss to Stanford. The seven wins equals the longest winning streak in the history of Ohio State women’s lacrosse that was set in 2002. In that season, the Buckeyes won its first six games of the season before falling to fifth-ranked North Carolina, 12-7.
BIG TEN/ACC CHALLENGE – ROUND THREE
In the third year of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge the first day results included No. 2 Maryland defeating No. 11 Penn State, 11-10 and No. 16 Ohio State defeating No. 9 North Carolina, 10-8. The second day, played in a -4 wind chill, had Penn State defeating North Carolina, 9-7 and Maryland defeating Ohio State, 10-5.
BOUNDS CLEANING UP IN GROUND BALLS
With 45 ground balls on the season, Tracey Bounds leads Ohio State in that category, leads the American Lacrosse Conference and ranks third in the country with a 5.00 per game average. In her three previous seasons at OSU, she had only 40 total ground balls compared to this season. Last week she produced a season-high eight ground balls against Maryland and had seven against North Carolina.
OLIVER HAD SEVEN POINTS ON THE WEEKEND
With two goals and two assists against North Carolina and three goals against Maryland, Regina Oliver produced seven points last weekend. She tops Ohio State for the season with 28 points on 21 goals and seven assists.
FORQUER SETS WIN STREAK AND HAS IT BROKEN
Ohio State’s 10-8 win over North Carolina was the seventh consecutive win for the Buckeyes and for Erin Forquer. The seven wins breaks the mark she set in 2002 when OSU won the first six games of the season. The streak did end two days later in the 10-5 loss to No. 2 Maryland. Forquer leads the American Lacrosse Conference in goals against average at 6.22 per game and save percentage at .588. Nationally, those figures rank her fifth in the country in goals against and seventh in save percentage.
CARTER HAS FOUR CAUSED TURNOVERS IN NORTH CAROLINA WIN
A season-high four caused turnovers by KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) helped OSU to a 10-8 upset victory over ninth-ranked North Carolina. She also scored OSU’s final goal of the game while adding two draw controls and a ground ball. Carter is fourth on the team in caused turnovers with 12 and ranks second in draw controls with 13.
WILSON MOVES TO THIRD IN OSU CAREER GOALS
A four-goal output in OSU’s win over North Carolina moved Shannon Wilson to a third place tie on the OSU career goals list. Wilson’s 87 goals has her tied for third with Celeste Cianfrani (1998-01). She has passed Mara Simpson (1996-99) with 84 and Lauren Cochran (1999-02) with 86.
OSU RANKED 10TH IN IWLCA POLL
The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has ranked Ohio State 10th in the poll released this week. OSU moved up six spots after a 10-8 win over ninth-ranked North Carolina. OSU received 84 points in the poll. Maryland (10-0), a 10-5 winner over Ohio State is now ranked No. 1 with 156 points.
OHIO STATE IN THE AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE STATISTICS
OSU’s Erin Forquer continues to lead the ALC statistically in both goals against average (6.22) and saves percentage (.588). Regina Oliver is fourth in scoring (3.11 points per game) and Shannon Wilson is seventh (2.56). Oliver is fourth in goals per game (2.33) with Wilson eighth (1.89). In assists per game, Oliver ranks fifth (.78), Wilson sixth (.67) and Tracey Bounds seventh (.56). In draw controls per game, Oliver is second (2.89) with Brandie Williams (So., Hatboro, Pa.) seventh (1.56). Bounds ranks first in ground balls at 5.00 per game. Oliver is second at 4.00 with Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Williams tied for fourth (3.00). In caused turnovers per game, Oliver ranks second (3.11) with Kim Lowe (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) sixth (1.67) and Williams eighth (1.56).
OHIO STATE IN THE NCAA NATIONAL STATISTICS
In the national statistics released Monday by the NCAA, Ohio State ranked sixth in the country in defense with a 6.78 goals against average. The Buckeyes were 30th in offense with a 10.22 goals per game average. OSU was ninth nationally in ground balls with a 31.89 per game average. Individually, Erin Forquer was fifth in goals against average (6.22) and seventh in save percentage (.588). Tracey Bounds leads the country in ground balls with a 5.00 per game average. Regina Oliver is ranked 19th in draw controls (2.89 per game), 17th in ground balls (4.00) and sixth in caused turnovers (3.11).
MIRICK MOVES FROM PLAYER TO COACH
Megan Mirick has ended her playing career with Ohio State, but has moved to the role of assistant coach for the Buckeyes. Mirick ended her four-year career with 143 goals and 182 points, both Ohio State career records. She held the career goals record from the 2001 season and set the career points record in 2003.
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel is in her eighth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 61-48 at Ohio State and is 137-66 in her 14-year career. The 2002 season was her most successful with a program-high 11 wins and finishing the regular season ranked 12th nationally.

Ohio State will play at Cornell at 4 p.m., Fri., April 11 next week.
