Columbus, Ohio – Day two of the 109th annual running of the Penn Relays exhibited yet another strong performance Friday afternoon by the Ohio State track and field squad as junior thrower Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio) posted a first place effort in the College Men’s Shot Put Championship.
Taylor, who scored first place in each of his last six throw events, earned his seventh-consecutive title-winning performance at the Penn Relays Collegiate Men Shot Put Championship with a 65-0.50. Taylor looks to couple his performance in the shot put with another Top 5 standing in the College Men Discus Championship later this evening.
Friday marked another impressive outing for the women’s throw squad as freshman Amarachi Ukabam (Creve Couer, Mo.) continued a stellar first season shattering her former personal-best 170-10 to claim third in the College Women’s Discus Championships with a heave of 178-3. Teammate Krista Keir (Westerville, Ohio), who placed second in Thursday’s College Women Shot Put Championship, added a second Top 10 performance with a 141-04 to earn 10th.
Senior Joel Brown (Woodlawn, Md.) led the Buckeyes in the track events as he marked a 13.76 season-best time to place second in Heat 2 of the College Men’s 110-Meter Hurdles Championships. Fellow senior hurdler Molly Logan (Darby, Pa.) also captured second place with a 13.43 in Heat 1 of the College Women’s 100-Meter Hurdles Championships. Both Brown and Logan’s times serve as NCAA Regional qualifying marks. Junior Brandi Hogan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) joined Logan in Heat 1 and posted a regional qualifier at 13.84. Later in the women’s heats of the 100-meter hurdles, junior Dalanda Jackson (Cleveland, Ohio) equaled her season-best with a 13.76 regional qualifying time to place third in Heat 3.
Sophomore Shayla Moore (Jessup, Md.) placed second in the women’s triple jump with a 42-1.25 leap to lead the OSU jumpers. Moore’s effort qualifies for regional competition.
The men’s 4×100-meter relay squad fell just shy of its season-best 41.11 set last week at the Pacesetter Invite with a 41.15 to possibly advance to the next round of heats, while Ohio State placed a team in the finals of the women’s shuttle hurdles event as the Buckeyes finished in a time of 58.45 in Heat 1.
Events continue Friday evening as the Buckeyes compete in the 4×400-meter relay events, the distance medley events, while Taylor seeks a second championship in the Collegiate Men’s Discus Championship.
