COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior Jackie Leskovar (Cambridge, Ontario) has been named the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the Conference announced Wednesday. It marks the first time this season a Buckeye has been so honored.
Leskovar went 3-0 at No. 3 singles and 2-1 at No. 2 doubles during the week as the squad went 2-1. After falling to then-No. 14 Kentucky Wednesday (4-3), the Buckeyes swept two Big Ten matches, beating Wisconsin, 6-1, before upsetting then-No. 19 Northwestern, 4-3.
Leskovar beat Kentucky’s Jill Buckley, 6-3, 7-6 (4), followed by a straight-set win over Wisconsin’s Katie McGaffigan (6-2, 6-0). She completed the weekend with a three-set victory over Northwestern’s Jamie Piesel. Against the Wildcats, Leskovar fought off four match points to win the third-set tiebreaker and tie the team match at three.
In her first season as a Buckeye, Leskovar, a transfer from N.C. State, is 22-15 overall in singles and 23-10 in doubles.
The Buckeyes (12-8, 6-2 Big Ten) close out the regular season this weekend with a chance to clinch at least a share of the league’s regular-season title. The squad stands in a tie for second place in the Big Ten with Illinois and Northwestern, as each team is 6-2 in league play and Minnesota is in first with a 7-1 mark. The Buckeyes will face Iowa in Iowa City Saturday, followed by a match against the Gophers in Minneapolis Sunday.
