COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team upset No. 19 Northwestern, 4-3, Sunday at the Stickney Tennis Center. The Buckeyes used the doubles point and three three-set singles victories for the victory. With the win, the No. 51 Buckeyes improve to 12-8 overall on the season and 6-2 in the Big Ten Conference. The loss drops Northwestern to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten.
The win was just OSU’s fifth all-time against the Wildcats (5-21) and their first since a 5-2 victory April 8, 2000. NU’s loss was just its second in conference play in the last 31 contests.
The Buckeyes won two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point for the 16th time in 20 matches this season. Erica Fisk (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and partner Jackie Leskovar (Jr., Cambridge, Ontario) topped Andrea Yung and Jamie Piesel in an 8-4 victory. Meaghan Colville (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) and Lindsey Adams (So., Mercer Island, Wash.) secured the doubles point with an 8-5 decision over Northwestern’s Connie Chang and Stacy Kokx. The Buckeye duo of Sadhaf Pervez (Sr., Warren, N.J.) and Lindsay Williams (Jr., Beverly Hills, Mich) were defeated by the No. 8-ranked duo of Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush, 8-5.
The Buckeyes picked up their singles points at the No. 3, 5, and 6 positions, as all three matches went to a third and final set. Ohio State’s Leskovar beat Piesel in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Emily DeCamilla (So., Sacramento, Calif.) rallied back against the Wildcats Ruth Barnes after dropping the first set to claim the win at the fifth position, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. No. 6 Lindsay Bryan (So., New Orleans, La.) locked up the third singles point for the Buckeyes as she came back against Stacy Kokx to win in a third-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
This is Ohio State’s 12th match this season that has been decided by one point. The Buckeyes are 8-5 in 4-3 matches on the year.
Ohio State will close out the regular season on the road next weekend. The Buckeyes will travel to Minnesota Saturday, April 19 and to Iowa on Sunday, April 20. Ohio State has a chance to win at least a share of the Big Ten Conference title next weekend with victories over the Gophers and Hawkeyes. Minnesota leads the league with a 7-1 mark, with Ohio State and Northwestern tied for second at 6-2.
