PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The No. 3 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team advanced to the 2003 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships Friday in Philadelphia, Pa., by posting a first-place 218.6 in the first session of the national qualifier. Also qualifying was No. 2 Penn State who placed second with 218.575 points and No. 6 Iowa with a third-place score of 214.075. The team and all-around championships are set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Temple University’s Liacouras Center with the remaining three teams to be determined at Session 2 of the national qualifier Friday at 7 p.m.
Ohio State performed strongly in all events scoring over 36 point in each rotation. The Buckeyes began the event on parallel bars where they posted a first-place 36.275 despite only performing five routines. On high bar, Ohio State placed third with 36.575 points. The Buckeyes’ 36.025 on floor took first place. Ohio State scored 36.475 points to land in second place on pommel horse. With enough points to qualify already tallied, the Buckeyes only performed four routines on rings, where they placed second with 36.95 points, and vault, where a fifth place 36.3 was all the team needed to not only advance to the finals but win the qualifying round.
On floor, Kerry Adderly (So., Orlando, Fla.) led the Buckeyes with a first-place score of 9.4 points and Jamey Houle (Jr., Enfield, Conn.) tied for fourth with 9.125 points. Raj Bhavsar (Sr., Houston, Texas) scored a 9.45 on pommel horse to place second, Ryan Schwartzkopf (Sr., Columbus, Ind.) posted a 9.4 to land in third place and Eric Van Sickle (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio) was in a four-way tie for eighth place with 9.0 points. On rings, Cody Trobaugh (So., Dallas, Texas) placed fourth with 9.4 point and teammate Matthew Smith (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) placed fifth with a 9.35. Trobaugh was the highest placing Buckeye on vault with 9.22 points in a tie for 11th. On parallel bars, the Buckeyes occupied three of the Top 4 spots with Adderly and Bhavsar placing second scoring 9.2 points and Ronald Ferris (Fr., Austintown, Ohio) in fourth scoring a 9.052. Randy Monahan (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) posted a career high 9.475 to take third place on high bar.
“I excited that we qualified but more excited that we qualified and had a chance to rest Raj and Randy, hopefully they will do a great job for us tomorrow,” Miles Avery, OSU head coach said. “Our performance today doesn’t say anything, our main goal is to qualify and rest our all-aounders. I’m glad we accomplished that. If we hit all of our routines tomorrow, we will do well.”
