The No. 25 Ohio State softball team (19-14; 2-2 Big Ten) dropped game two at Akron (16-13 MAC), 1-0, in a doubleheader characterized by defense at Butchel Field Thursday evening. Senior pitcher Katie Chain (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover), who is 8-8 this season, struck out seven Akron batters. Megan MacKenzie’s win vs. the Buckeyes moved her to an even 7-7 on the year.
“It was important to get (pitcher) Katie (Chain) back after she has been struggling with an injury (in her hand),” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “We need to find a way to score.”
Ohio State started off strong by not allowing a hit in the first three innings, but Akron’s Becky Stern opened the bottom of the fourth by getting on base off a walk, stealing second and crossing home after teammate Kerry Omerza doubled to right field for her second RBI in as many games vs. Ohio State Thursday. In game one vs. the Buckeyes, Omerza brought home the only run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Zips the victory.
At the top of the third inning with two outs, Ohio State’s Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) hit a single towards second base and stole second before senior Jenn Link (Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) singled and advanced on the throw; however, both Buckeyes were left on base. Evans and Link accounted for the only two hits Ohio State garnered.
The Buckeyes return to Big Ten action with a doubleheader vs. Iowa beginning at noon Sunday, April 13, at Buckeye Field in Columbus.
