Cross Country Coach to Run in USA 8K Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State head cross country and assistant track and field coach Robert Gary, who most recently qualified for his sixth United States World Cross Country team by winning the 2003 United States 4-kilometer Cross Country Championship in Houston, Texas, will join former Ohio State distance great and Olympian Mark Croghan (1988-92) in the U.S. 8-kilometer Championships held in Central Park in the heart of New York, New York April 5.
Gary, who is in the midst of his sixth season on the OSU track and field staff, excelled as a distance and cross country runner at Ohio State from 1992 to 1996 and represented the United States in Atlanta as a member of the 1996 Olympic team in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the Olympic Trials, he captured second behind Croghan, who was a two-time NCAA champion in the steeplechase while at Ohio State. In addition, Croghan holds the second-best mark in U.S. history in the steeplechase with an 8:09.76 posted in 1993.
Gary and Croghan, who currently train together, will compete in the event April 5. Gary is currently running for Adidas and is training for his fourth appearance at the World Cross Country Championships and second Olympic team in Athens, Greece in 2004.
