COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (5-1, 2-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team had eight student-athletes score goals in OSU’s 14-4 victory over 20th-ranked Northwestern (5-1, 1-1) Sunday afternoon at Northwestern. OSU’s Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored three goals each for the Buckeyes as Ohio State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first half. The win was OSU’s fifth consecutive victory.
Ohio State opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by Oliver with 2:08 gone in the contest. Less than a minute later (3:04), Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) scored with an assist from Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario). OSU made it 3-0 at 4:51 with a goal by Noemi Hites (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.), assisted by Oliver. The Wildcats got on the scoreboard at 16:38 with a Lindsey Munday goal, assisted by Courtney Flynn. The OSU scoring blitz began again at 18:16 with Oliver’s second unassisted goal. That was followed at 24:14 with a score by Molly McLaughlin (Jr., Towson, Md.) with an assist from Wilson. The Buckeyes made it 6-1 with an unassisted goal by Wilson at 25:02. Northwestern made it 6-2 with an unassisted goal by Flynn. OSU added another round of three goals with an unassisted score by Ashley Evans (So., Ellicott City, Md.) at 27:04. Oliver, at 27:50, collected her third goal of the game with another assist from Wilson. OSU closed out the scoring in the first half, with just eight seconds left (29:52), with an unassisted goal by Bounds to give OSU a 9-2 lead. The second half opened with Northwestern scoring at 36:35 on a goal by Angela McMahon. The Buckeyes added to their lead at 38:30 when Alexia Vogler (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) assisted on Hites’ second goal. Bounds made it 11-3 on an assist by Evans at 43:10. The Wildcats scored their final goal of the game at 47:23 on a free position attempt by Erin Flynn to cut OSU’s lead to 11-4. The Buckeyes continued to add to the lead with a second Weatherill goal, assisted by Hites, at 48:21. Bounds added a third goal at 48:45 and KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) closed out the scoring at 58:38, on Wilson’s fourth assist to give OSU a 14-4 victory.
Northwestern’s Ashley Gersuk took the loss in goal for the Wildcats making 14 saves. OSU’s Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) earned her fifth consecutive win and collected seven saves.
The Buckeyes continue on the road to face 12th-ranked Notre Dame (2-2) at 4 p.m., Tues., March 25. OSU then returns home to face ninth-ranked North Carolina (2-3) at 7 p.m., Fri., March 28 and second-ranked Maryland (6-0) at 2 p.m., Sun., March 30. The matches are part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge that has 11th-ranked Penn State (3-2) facing Maryland at 5 p.m. Friday and North Carolina at noon Sunday.
