HONOLULU, Hawai’i– The No. 16 Ohio State softball team (15-10) suffered a 10-4 loss to the Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine Sunday in its final game of the Hawai’i/Chevron Invitational in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The Buckeyes were unable to recover from committing four errors and a six-run second inning by the Rainbow Wahine as Hawai’i recorded five hits and two home runs, one a three-run shot, to blow the game open. Ohio State was led by Meghan Rowlands (So., Hilliard, Ohio) who was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Rogeanna Hottinger (Sr., Newark, Ohio) hit her second home run of the year in the third.
Hawai’i’s Stacey Porter and Kate Judd both left the yard for Hawai’i in the second inning. Porter hit the first, a three-run shot off Katie Chain (Sr., North Canton, Ohio) to extend UH’s lead to 6-0. Chain was then replaced by Chelsea Baker (Fr., Gahanna, Ohio) and Judd immediately hit a solo homer which proved to be the last run of the inning.
The Rainbow Wahine scored their eighth run on an errant throw by OSU catcher Stacy Hibma (Sr., Buena Park, Calif.) attempting to pick off Dahlberg who stole third on the play. They then added two more in the fourth when Trisha Ramos hit a sacrifice fly to score April Crowell. Dahlberg then followed that up with a single to left-center to score Porter and make it a 10-1 Rainbow Wahine lead.
The Buckeyes did not give up, however, as they battled back to score three more. After a Hibma double to left, Breana Pozzi (Jr., Petaluma, Calif.) doubled down the left field line to score pinch runner Nicole Lancaster (Fr., Magnolia, Ohio). Pozzi then scored on when Ashley Cutcliff (So., Zionsville, Ind.) reached on error by Judd in the outfield.
Ohio State would score its final run in the bottom of the seventh when Annie Dedic (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) doubled to left field to score Rowlands all the way from first.
Chain went 1.2 innings for OSU before being replaced by Baker who went 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Andrea Tribuzi (Fr., Plano, Texas) pitched the final inning for the Buckeyes while recording one strikeout.
The Buckeyes finished 2-4 at the Chevron Invitational and will now shift their focus to Big Ten play as they open the conference season at 3 p.m. Friday against Indiana at Buckeye Field in Columbus. Ohio State will play Indiana again at noon Saturday and will play host to Purdue in a doubleheader at noon Sunday March 30.
