Track and Field Completes Baldy Castillo Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams completed competition Saturday on the campus of Arizona State University and Sun Angel Stadium for the 2003 Baldy Castillo Open. OSU hurdler Dalanda Jackson led OSU with a first place performance in the 100-meter hurdles in her first event of 2003. Senior thrower Krista Keir led three regional qualifiers from Saturday’s events with a 186-1.00 Ohio State record-setting effort in the discus.
Keir placed first in the event, while freshman Amarachi Ukabam, who placed third in Friday’s shot put event, earned a regional qualifier with a 169-7.00 performance to place second. Keir’s figure tops teammate Alexis McCall’s 182-4.00 mark set in 2002.
Also earning a regional bid was junior high jumper Jeff Cerveny, who placed fourth with a 6-9.50 mark in his event.
Jackson, who missed the indoor season, posted a 14.27 mark to place first in her initial competition of 2003. Jackson is a returning All-American.
Ohio State sophomore Greg Norman earned a fourth place standing in the 100-meter dash with a 10.88, fellow sophomore Pannsy Henry earned runner-up in the women’s 800-meter run (2:13.15)
In Friday’s competition, the throw squad boasted the six qualifying marks as sophomore Shelaine Larson and junior Katie Hauser placed third and fourth in the women’s hammer throw. Larson’s 51.85-meter effort qualifies for Mideast regional competition, which will be held at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium May 30 and 31. Hauser tallied a 51.17m throw in claiming fourth.
Also contributing on the women’s side was defending 2002 Big Ten shot put champion Alexis McCall, who qualified with a 48-1.75-meter throw for second place in the event.
Making his return to the field after a one-year absence following an elbow injury in 2002 was two-time Big Ten javelin champion George Hoover, who qualified with a second place 209-4 mark in the event finals.
Rounding out the Buckeye qualifiers was senior thrower John Norman, who scored a 55.17-meter performance in the men’s hammer throw to finish seventh.
Senior Joel Brown led the Ohio State track competitors with a third place performance in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a time of 54.62. Junior Becky Heintz posted a fourth place finish in the women’s pole vault (11-0.25).
