Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Friday on the campus of Arizona State University and Sun Angel Stadium for the 2003 Baldy Castillo Open. Four OSU student-athletes scored regional qualifying marks in the respective events in the non-team scoring meet.
The throw squad once again led the Ohio State contingent as it boasted the four qualifying marks as sophomore Shelaine Larson and junior Katie Hauser placed third and fourth in the women’s hammer throw. Larson’s 51.85-meter effort qualifies for Mideast regional competition, which will be held at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium May 30 and 31. Hauser tallied a 51.17m throw in claiming fourth.
Also contributing on the women’s side was defending 2002 Big Ten shot put champion Alexis McCall, who qualified with a 48-1.75-meter throw for second place in the event. Senior Erin Carter and Freshman Amarachi Ukabam also posted qualifying scores.
Making his return to the field after a one-year absence following an elbow injury in 2002 was two-time Big Ten javelin champion George Hoover, who qualified with a second place 209-4 mark in the event finals.
Rounding out the Buckeye qualifiers was senior thrower John Norman, who scored a 55.17-meter performance in the men’s hammer throw to finish seventh.
Senior Joel Brown led the Ohio State track competitors with a third place performance in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a time of 54.62. Junior Becky Heintz posted a fourth place finish in the women’s pole vault (11-0.25).
Second day action resumes at Sun Angel Stadium Saturday at 11 a.m. (MST).
