Women’s Track and Field Finishes Fourth at Big Ten Indoor Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s track and field team concluded competition Sunday with a fourth place finish at the 2003 Big Ten Indoor Championships. The Buckeyes finished the event with 69.0 points to edge out Wisconsin, who finished with 68.0 points. Indiana University played host to the event and placed second behind 2003 champion Michigan.
Tami Smith (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Westland) entered her final Big Ten indoor meet Sunday and captured her third-consecutive conference title in the high jump. Smith, who was crowned Big Ten champion in both the 2002 indoor and outdoor events, defended her title in a jump-off with Stephanie Linz and Jennifer Kulchar of Michigan, who placed second and third, with a leap of 5-9.75.
Ohio State continued their strong performances in the field events, placing four individuals in the Top 8 in the weight throw. Keturah Lofton (So., Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville), who possessed the top mark in the conference during the regular season, led the way placing second with a throw of 62-01.75. In her first appearance at the Big Ten indoor championships, Amarachi Ukabam (Fr., Chesterfield, Ohio/Marquette) turned in a strong performance with a throw of 59-02.00 and placed fourth.
In the women’s triple jump Shayla Moore (So., Jessup, Md./Long Beach) clinched fourth place for the Buckeyes with her leap of 41-11.50.
After qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, Molly Logan (Jr., Darby, Pa./Penn Wood Senior) and Brandi Hogan (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry Traditional) finished third and sixth respectively, with Logan posting a time of 8.38 seconds, while Hogan finished in 8.55 seconds.
In the final event of the day the Buckeyes finished strong placing second in the 4×400-meter relay in a time of 3:46.84.
Individuals who qualified for the 2003 NCAA championships will return to action March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark. at the University of Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Indoor Track.
