No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse Hosts No. 15 Johns Hopkins and Virginia Tech – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 18th-ranked Ohio State (2-1, 0-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad will have two home games this weekend as the Buckeyes face 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins (1-1, 0-0) at 7 p.m., Fri., March 14 and Virginia Tech (0-4) at 1 p.m., Sun., March 16. Both games are scheduled to be played in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Last week Ohio State went 2-0 on the road with an 11-2 victory at Lafayette. Ohio State finished second (3-way tie) in the ALC last year with Vanderbilt winning the championship. Johns Hopkins and Penn State were tied with Ohio State for second.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes, coached by Sue Stimmel, have a 2-1 overall record and are ranked 18th in the IWLCA poll this week. OSU defeated Lafayette 11-2 last Sunday. Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) is OSU’s top goal scorer with eight with Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) second with six and Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.). Oliver has a team-high three assists while Wilson (8-1) and Oliver (6-3) share the team lead in points with nine. Oliver has team-highs in ground balls with 21, caused turnovers with 15 and 10 draw controls. In goal, Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) is 2-0 with a 4.0 goals against average and a .579 saves percentage. Kim Hastings (Fr., Sewickley, Pa.) is 0-1 with an 11.0 goals against average and a .429 saves percentage.
A LOOK AT JOHNS HOPKINS
The Blue Jays, coached by Janine Tucker, are 1-1 overall. They host Pennsylvania Tuesday. Johns Hopkins opened the season with an 11-8 loss to No. 2 Duke and defeated William and Mary, 12-7, last week. Heidi Pearce has scored a team-high four goals for the Blue Jays with Meghan Burnett, Erinn Dennis and Liz Holland adding three each. Pearce has a team-high four assists with Burnett and Anne Crisafulli recording two each. Pierce leads the team in points with eight (4-4) with Burnett second at five (3-2). In goal, Jen McDonald has started both contests and has a 9.15 goals against average and a .379 saves percentage.
THE SERIES WITH JOHNS HOPKINS
The only meeting in the series was won 11-10 by Johns Hopkins last season.
A LOOK AT VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies, coached by Tami Riley, are 0-4 on the season. Virgina Tech plays at Ohio University Friday prior to the Sunday game at Ohio State. The Hokies opened the season with a 16-2 loss at No. 2 Duke. They have lost to No. 4 Georgetown, 17-5, No. 7 Syracuse, 8-7 and to George Mason, 13-9. Kate Threadgold and Katie Madden share a team-high six goals. Madden has a team-high three assists with Sam Sybert, Kristin Koughlin and Stephanie Jones each recording two assists. Madden has a team-high nine points (6-3) for the Hokies with Threadgold, second with six (6-0). In goal, Jamie McGraw has a 13.10 goals against average and a .390 saves percentage.
THE SERIES WITH VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies have a 6-1 advantage in the series with the Buckeyes. OSU has lost all four contests played in Blacksburg including a 16-14 defeats last season. In Columbus, the Buckeyes are 1-2 against Virginia Tech having won, 11-5, in 2001.
VOGLER HAS OUTSTANDING GAME
With two goals and two assists against Lafayette, Alexia Vogler had an outstanding game against the Leopards. Her back-to-back goals in the first half helped OSU to a 4-0 lead with her first goal being the game winner in the 11-2 victory. Vogler also contributed six ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover against Lafayette.
OLIVER BECOMES THIRD TOP SCORER THIS SEASON
Against Lafayette, Regina Oliver became the third Buckeye to lead OSU in goals. She had a game-high three goals against the Leopards. Previously, Shannon Wilson’s five goals against Stanford and Tracey Bounds’ three goals against Richmond were OSU’s top performances this season. In the game, Oliver also recorded five ground ball, five draw controls and four caused turnovers. For the season, Oliver tops the American Lacrosse Conference in ground balls (7.00 per game) and caused turnovers (5.00 per game).
FORQUER STRONG IN GOAL
In the Lafayette game, Erin Forquer gave up only two goals and recorded six saves in picking up her second win of the season. Forquer had five saves while giving up six goals in OSU’s 7-6 win at Richmond a week ago. She currently leads the American Lacrosse Conference with a 4.00 goals against average and a 57.9% saves percentage.
CARTER SCORES IN THIRD STRAIGHT GAME
With two goals against Lafayette, freshman KC Carter has now scored in all three contests this season. Carter assisted on OSU’s first goal by Regina Oliver, scored the Buckeyes’ second goal and added another tally in the second half. She scored goals against Stanford and Richmond to open the season.
OSU RANKED 18TH IN IWLCA POLL
The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has ranked Ohio State 18th in the poll released this week for the second straight week. The Buckeyes dropped from 11th in the preseason poll after being edged 11-10 by Stanford and defeating 19th-ranked Richmond. OSU received 39 points in the poll. Princeton continues to hold down the top spot in the poll.
MIRICK MOVES FROM PLAYER TO COACH
Megan Mirick has ended her playing career with Ohio State, but has moved to the role of assistant coach for the Buckeyes. Mirick ended her four-year career with 143 goals and 182 points, both Ohio State career records. She held the career goals record from the 2001 season and set the career points record in 2003.
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel is in her eighth season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 56-47 at Ohio State and is 132-65 in her 14-year career. The 2002 season was her most successful with a program-high 11 wins and finishing the regular season ranked 12th nationally.
UPCOMING FOR THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State will face conference foe Northwestern (4-0, 1-0) at 1 p.m., Sun., March 25 in Evanston. The Buckeyes will then travel to Notre Dame (0-1) for a 4 p.m., Tues., March 25 contest in South Bend.
