Ohio State Softball Moves Past Ohio University, 5-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State softball team (4-0) topped Ohio University (0-4), 5-3, in game four of the third-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic Sunday. Junior second base player Jennifer Johnson (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) led the Buckeye offense by going 2-for-2 from the plate and scoring two runs. Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales), freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) and shortstop B.J. Carder (So./Celina, Ohio/Celina) also crossed home for Ohio State. Senior pitcher Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona), who went 2-for-4 and tallied an RBI, was credited with the win from the mound. Ohio University’s Kerri Harley was the losing pitcher.
The Buckeyes scored first in the bottom of the third inning. Johnson walked and advanced to second when Schwab flied out to left field. DeVries singled to the shortstop and Johnson scored off an error by the Bobcat’s second base player.
Ohio responded at the top of the fourth inning by notching two runs. Jenny Tisevich reached on an error by the Buckeye’s third base player, Breana Pozzi (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande), and proceeded to steal second. OU’s Erin Chapman singled to right field, advanced to second on the throw and notched an RBI when Tisevich crossed home. Bobcat Robin Miller got to first off an error by Carder, which scored Chapman, and sent OU up, 2-1.
Ohio State tallied four scores in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead (5-2). Carder doubled down the left-field line and moved to second when outfielder Meghan Rowland (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) walked. Johnson earned an RBI when she singled to third base and sent Carder home. Rowlands was called out at third on the previous play, but Schwab singled up the middle and sent Johnson to second base. Baker reached first on an error by OU’s shortstop, which sent Schwab to third and crossed Johnson. Baker stole second and Schwab scored on another Bobcat error by the shortstop. DeVries tallied an RBI on the next play when she doubled to centerfield and sent Baker across home plate.
OU would not go down without a fight. In the top of the seventh inning, Sarah Melvin reached first on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second after Kiersten Scrima singled to left field. With two outs, OU’s Debbie Szalejko singled to left field and brought Melvin home, which made the game 5-3 in favor of the Buckeyes, but the OSU defense secured the win when left fielder Schwab threw the ball to Hales, who reacted quickly and got Scrima on the same play at third base to end the game.
Ohio State takes on Kent State at 3 p.m. Sunday in the final game of the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic. The Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic is an annual tournament with state of Ohio schools benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
