Women’s Volleyball Falls To Purdue In Four Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLU MBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-5 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad dropped a 3-1 (30-27, 25-30, 22-30, 20-30) decision to Purdue (10-4, 3-1) Saturday night in front of 1,527 fans in St. John Arena. Buckeye Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a team-high 21 kills with Weather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 11. Purdue’s Kim McConaha had a match-high 25 kills for the Boilermakers with Melanie Ukovich adding 14 and Kim Cappa 10. Gordon’s 21 kills is her 60th consecutive match scoring double-figure kills and the 73rd of her career covering 75 matches.
Purdue took an early 3-1 lead in game one and held a four-point lead at 20-16. With a Purdue error, OSU tied the game at 23. After ties at 24 and 25, two Purdue errors gave OSU at 27-25 lead. Purdue’s Ukovich, with a kill, cut the lead to 27-26. A Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill made it 28-26, OSU. Another McCarthy kills set game point at 29-26. A Ukovich kill made it 29-27 before Gordon’s 10th kill of the game ended it at 30-27. Ohio State hit .319 for the game to .146 for Purdue.
Tied at 12 in game two, Purdue took a 16-12 lead with kills by Leah Wischmeier, McConaha and Katie Dobson and an ace serve from McConaha. Leading by as many as seven, Purdue held the lead for a 30-25 win. The Boilermakers hit .488 for the game to .282 for Ohio State.
A Purdue service error opened game three for OSU’s only lead. Two kills by McConaha and one from Renata Dargan gave Purdue a 3-1 lead. The Boilermakers continued to build the lead to eight (18-10), winning by that margin at 30-22. Purdue hit .424 for the game to .129 for OSU.
Game four began like the third with a Purdue error opening a 1-0 OSU lead. Two Buckeye errors and an Purdue ace by Ukovich gave Purdue a 3-1 lead. OSU trailed 10-9 before kills by Cappa and McConaha and an OSU error made it 13-9. Purdue expanded the lead to 10, winning the game, 30-20. The Boilermakers hit .259 to OSU’s .115 in the game. For the match, Purdue hit .331 to .231 for the Buckeyes. The Boilermakers had a 64-61 advantage in kills and a 6-3 margin in ace serves. The Boilermakers gave up 15 service errors to 10 for OSU. Defensively, Ohio State had a 52-43 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high 13. At the net, Purdue held a 10-6 margin in team blocks with Boilermaker Dobson picking up a match-high five assist blocks. Purdue’s Dargan had 53 assists in the match to 48 for McCarthy.
Ohio State now travels to play at Northwestern next Fri., Oct. 10 and at Illinois, Sat., Oct. 11.
