The Ohio State softball team (1-0) opened the third-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic with a 7-1 victory over Wright State (0-1) Saturday morning. The Buckeyes were led by freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), who went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs and earned the victory from the mound, and senior Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona), who tallied three RBI’s. Wright State’s Jacqueline Goosen was credited with the loss.
Ohio State got on the board in the first inning when DeVries doubled down the left-field line to bring home freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and Juarez. Koyano singled to the pitcher and advanced to second when classmate Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) grounded out at first. Juarez singled through the left side and advanced to second while Juarez made it to third off the throw before both runners crossed home thanks to DeVries.
Wright State’s only score came at the bottom of the second inning. Amanda Cody reached first off an Ohio State error. Carly Rutherford was sent in to pinch run for Cody and was made it to third when Goosen reached first and advanced to second on another Buckeye error. Becky Babin singled and crossed Rutherford to give the Raiders their first and only run of the game.
The Buckeye notched four score at the top of the third. Douglas opened the inning by singling to second base and advanced when Juarez hit another single. Both Ohio State players advanced on a passed ball and DeVries hit a single to bring home Douglass. Senior Breana Pozzi (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) then grounded out to second base and earned an RBI when Juarez scored. Outfielder Meghan Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) was walked and stole second base before catcher Natalie Hales (Canton, Ohio/Eastern Michigan) singled down the left-field line to bring home Rowlands and DeVries. Ohio State got one last run on the board in the fifth inning. Rowlands singled to right centerfield and advanced to second when Hales was walked. Rowlands and Hales rounded to third and second base, respectively, on a wild pitch before a B.J. Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) single to left field brought Rowlands over home plate for the second time that game.
The Buckeyes take on Bowling Green at 3 p.m. Saturday on field one at Fred Beekman Park. The Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic is an annual tournament with state of Ohio schools benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
