Women’s Volleyball Takes Down Conference Co-Leader, Indiana, 30-24, 30-28, 30-24 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-4 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad needed only 86 minutes to sweep previous Big Ten co-leader Indiana (9-5, 2-1) 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-24) Friday night in front of 948 fans in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 26 kills with Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) adding 16. Indiana’s Christina Archibald had a team-high 14 kills for the Hoosiers with Katie Pollom adding eight.
Ohio State opened game one with the first four points. Miller opened the run with a kill. Gordon made it 2-0 with a kill. Gordon and D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) combined for a block and an ace serve by Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) made it 4-0. At 8-5, three Indiana errors gave OSU a six-point lead at 11-5. Indiana would cut the lead to three several times near the end of the game. At 27-24, OSU closed out the game with three straight points for a 30-24 win. Ohio State hit .406 for the game to .276 for Indiana.
Indiana took a 1-0 lead in game two with an Archibald kill. OSU kills by Gordon, Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) gave OSU a 3-1 lead. At 7-4, a Shackleford kill, an ace serve by Holly Cram (So., La Mirada, Calif.) and a Miller kill opened up a 10-4 lead. With Indiana trailing 17-13, a Pollom kill, a block by Katy Jo Mroski and Pollom and two ace serves from Lindsay Cochrane tied the game at 17. Following an Ohio State time out, OSU regained the lead with two Miller kills and one from Shackleford to take a 20-17 lead. At 28-25, an Indiana error set game point at 29-25. The Hoosiers held off three game points with an OSU error, a Pollom ace serve and an Archibald kill to close the lead to 29-28. OSU’s Gordon responded with a kill to end the game at 30-28. The Buckeyes hit .450 in the game to .243 for Indiana. With two kills each from McCarthy and Gordon, Ohio State took a 4-0 lead in game three. At 4-1, a McCarthy solo block, two Gordon kills opened a 7-1 Buckeye lead. OSU expanded the lead to nine at 18-9. Indiana would close to within five at 28-23, but OSU’s Miller, with two kills, ended the game at 30-24. OSU hit .465 for the game to .276 for Indiana.
Ohio State hit a season-high .443 in the match while Indiana hit .263. The Buckeyes had a 64 to 40 advantage in kills while each squad recorded six ace serves. OSU’s McCarthy had a career-high three aces and tied IU’s Pollom for the match-high. Ohio State gave up nine service errors to only two for Indiana. Defensively, Ohio State had a 37-26 advantage in digs with OSU’s Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) collecting a match-high 10. Each squad had eight team blocks in the match. Indiana’s Pollom (one solo, three assists) and OSU’s McCarthy (two solos, two assists) shared match-high honors. Ohio State’s McCarthy had 50 assists in the match with IU’s Victoria Zimmerman recording 33.
The Buckeyes will host Purdue (9-4, 2-1), who lost 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-25) at Penn State (14-1, 3-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
BUCKEYE NOTES: Stacey Gordon hit a season-high .469 (26-3-49) Her previous best was .372 (32-9-62) against Cleveland State. Gordon recorded her 59th consecutive match with double-figure kills. She also recorded her fourth 10-plus kill game this season with 10 kills in game three.
Amanda Miller hit a career-high .636 (16-2-22). Her previous best was .500 (8-2-12) against Bowling Green.
Briana McCarthy had career-highs of 3 aces (previous was 2, two times, the last against Rice) and two solo blocks (previous 1 against Cleveland State).
Ohio State hit a season-high .443 (64-13-115). Previous best was .309 (71-24-152) against Ball State.
