Women’s Tennis Begins Play at ITA Midwest Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team started play in the qualifying singles draw Thursday at the ITA Midwest Regional in Kalamazoo, Mich. Anna Volberg (Fr., Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) won her first-round match and three other Buckeyes won consolation matches.
Volberg defeated Emily Wang of Big Ten foe Illinois in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to No. 9-16 seed Hilary Mintz of Iowa, 6-1, 6-3.
Lindsay Adams (Jr., Mercer Island, Wash./ Mercer Island), Kristen Messmer (Fr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) all won consolation matches.
Adams defeated Valeria Stoilova of host Western Michigan. Messmer topped Tammie Spiel of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Ruzimovsky beat Maria Blanco of Southern Illinois.
Singles qualifying play continues at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Kalamazoo, Mich., on Friday.
The 64-team doubles main draw also begins on Friday. The team of seniors Erica Fisk (Indianapolis, Ind./ Pike) and Jackie Leskovar (Cambridge, Ontario/ North Carolina State) is seeded No. 9-16 and will face Hilde Jansma and Hilary Tyler of Iowa. Adams and Meaghan Colville (Sr., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) will face Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott of Cleveland State in another first-round match. The third Buckeye doubles squad, Vincent and Volberg, received a bye and begins play Saturday against the winner of the first-round match between No. 5-8 seed Frederika Girsang and Valeria Stoilova of host Western Michigan and Jill Carie and Beth Miller of Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW).
