Women’s Volleyball Falls 0-3 At No. 15 Penn State, 18-30, 20-30, 25-30 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-9 overall, 2-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad, dropped a 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-25) decision at No. 15 Penn State (18-3, 7-2) Wednesday in Rec Hall. Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) recorded match-highs of 24 kills and 12 digs for the Buckeyes with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding eight. Erin Iceman scored a team-high 12 kills for the Nittany Lions with Cara Smith adding 11.
Ohio State held an early 4-3 lead in game one with two Gordon Kills. Penn State then outscored OSU, 9-3 to open a 12-7 lead. The Nittany Lions continued to build the lead to a final 30-18 score. Penn State hit .419 for the game to .049 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State built a 5-1 lead to open game two with three kills by Gordon and two from D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio). Penn State responded to take a 7-5 lead. OSU went up, 8-7, with kills by Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Gordon and a McCarthy-Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) block. Four Buckeye errors and a Smith kill gave Penn State a 12-8 lead. Penn State then outscored OSU, 18-12, to take a 30-20 win. The Nittany Lions hit .256 to OSU’s .080.
A Gordon kill gave OSU a 9-8 lead in game three. Penn State scored the next eight points to take a 16-9 lead. OSU would close to four points (29-25) with a Shackleford-McCarthy block, but an Ashley Pederson kill ended the game at 30-25. PSU hit .344 for the game to .211 for Ohio State.
For the match, Penn State hit .330 to OSU’s .109. The Buckeyes had a 47-43 advantage in kills while Penn State had a 4-0 margin in ace serves. The Nittany Lions gave up eight service errors to five for OSU. The Buckeyes had a 51-43 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high 12. Penn State had a 13.5 to five margin in team blocks with PSU’s Smith collecting a match-high seven assists. Buckeye setter McCarthy had 39 assists in the match to 37 for PSU’s Sam Tortorello.
NOTES: Stacey Gordon’s 24 kills was her 65th consecutive match with double-figure kills. It was her eighth consecutive match with 21 or more kills. It was her 78 out of 80 career matches with double-figure kills. In game three, Gordon had her 11th match this season with 10 or more kills. She had 10 kills while hitting .500 with three errors in 14 attempts.
