Softball’s Gray Squad Takes First Two Games of Scarlet & Gray Series – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team’s Gray squad took the first two games of the annual Scarlet and Gray series, winning Wednesday, 2-0, and Thursday, 5-1, at Buckeye Field.
In Wednesday’s contest, sophomore Nicole Lancaster (Magnolia, Ohio/Sandy Valley) singled to left field, stole second and third and then scored on a throwing error to put the Gray up, 1-0. In the fifth inning, freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) reached on a fielding error and later scored on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian).
Freshman Jamee Juarez (LaPuente, Calif./Wilson) allowed just two hits in pitching the shutout for the Gray squad. Sophomore Billy Jo Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) went 2-for-3 with a triple for the Gray.
Thursday, sophomore pitcher Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) allowed just one hit and three base runners through the first six innings as the Gray took the second game of the series with a 5-1 victory. Lancaster and Juarez each scored twice and added one hit apiece, while Hibma, Baker, junior Meghan Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) and senior Beth McAbier (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) all notched one base hit.
For the Scarlet, junior Natalie Hales (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and senior Breana Pozzi (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) knocked back-to-back singles to lead off the seventh inning and moved up a base following a sacrifice by sophomore Andrea Tribuzi (Plano, Texas/East), who suffered the loss on the mound. Hales then scored on an RBI single from freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain).
The Scarlet and Gray Series will resume Friday night at 7 p.m. and continue next week as needed.
