COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (3-2) men’s volleyball squad, behind a match-high 21 kills from Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.), defeats St. Francis (Pa.) (1-2) 3-1 (30-19, 30-25, 28-30, 30-16) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.) added nine kills and Mark Greaves (Fr., Fenton, Mo.) eight in OSU’s third win of the season. Brandon Kelly (So., Greenfield, Ind.) and Taylor Whitehurst (Sr., Bel Air, Md.) had 11 kills each for St. Francis with Chris Scrabis (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) adding 10.
Ohio State opened game one with a block by Brett Hamilton (So., Rockville, Md.), Trantow and Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.), a St. Francis error and a Trantow kill to take a 3-0 lead. At 6-4, two Red Flash errors, a Pedersen kill, an ace serve by Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) and a Trantow kill opened a an 11-4 lead. The Buckeyes held a 24-17 lead by a Trantow kill, a St. Francis error, an ace serve by Trantow and a Greaves kill made it 28-17. A Pedersen kill ended the game at 30-19. OSU hit .500 for the game to .250 for St. Francis.
Game two saw OSU hold the lead, but the Red Flash kept it close. A St. Francis block by Scott Funke (Fr., Eden, N.Y.) and Whitehurst cut the Buckeye lead to 22-21. Buckeye kills by Greaves and Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) gave OSU a 24-21 lead. A Matt Farabaugh (Sr., Altoona, Pa.) kill cut the OSU lead to 24-22. OSU kills by Hamilton and Greaves and a St. Francis error pushed the lead to 27-22. Red Flash kills by Whitehurst and Kelly made it 27-24. A Hamilton kill and a St. Francis error set game point at 29-24. Hitting error by both teams close the game at 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .379 for the game to .294 for the Red Flash.
St. Francis trailed 4-2 in game three before the Red Flash scored the next five points to open a 7-4 lead. The run began with kills by Whitehurst and Stephen Connell (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.). After an ace serve by Whitehurst, a Connell-Chad O’Brien (Sr., New Oxford, Pa.) block and a Kelly kill completed the scoring run. Trailing 9-6, OSU responded with kills by Hamilton and Trantow and two St. Francis errors to take a 10-9 lead. At 19-all, two Red Flash errors, a Mark Lehman (Sr., Galena, Ohio) ace serve and a Pedersen kill gave Ohio State a 23-19 lead. St. Francis on two OSU errors, a Scrabis kill and a solo block by Whitehurst tied the game at 23. Tied at 26, a Whitehurst kill and ace serve gave St. Francis a 28-26 lead. A Red Flash error made it 28-27. Kelly countered with a kill to set game point at 29-27. a Mike Wauligman (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill stopped the game point at 29-28 but a Farabaugh kill ended the game at 30-28 for St. Francis. The Red Flash hit .278 for the game to .179 for OSU.
Ohio State took the early lead in game four. Leading 8-5, a Trantow kill and solo block made it 10-5. Two errors by both teams moved the score to 12-7. A Buckeye error and a Connell ace serve made it 12-9. Back-to-back kills by Trantow, a St. Francis error and a block by Peckham and Hamilton made it 16-9. The Buckeyes held a 27-16 when a St. Francis service error, a Trantow kill and a Red Flash error ended the game at 30-16, giving OSU a 3-1 win in the match. OSU hit .375 for the game to -.088 for St. Francis.
For the match Ohio State hit .350 to .177 for St. Francis. The Buckeyes had a 53-48 advantage in kill. Each squad recorded seven ace serve with Whitehurst of the Red Flash scoring a match-high three. St. Francis gave up 25 service errors to 18 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 36-26 margin in digs with OSU’s Trantow recording a match-high 12. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 10.5 to 9 advantage in team blocks. Red Flash Whitehurst had a match-high seven blocks with one solo and six assists. OSU’s Hamilton had a team-high six assist blocks. OSU’s Peckham had 44 assists in the match to 39 for O’Brien.
Ohio State continues play at home next week when it hosts Springfield College for matches on Saturday, Feb. 1 and Sunday, Feb. 2. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
