COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams will return to action this Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind. to compete against pre-season ranked teams from Indiana and Purdue. Both men’s and women’s teams from Indiana and Purdue are very talented and should provide for some excellent matchups.
LAST TIME OUT
In the first team-scoring event of the season, the Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams placed first, defeating Illinois and Illinois State. The meet took place Saturday at the University of Illinois Armory Indoor Facility.
Both men’s and women’s teams received strong showings in the field events. Dan Taylor (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio/ Berkshire) capped off another strong showing in the shot put, throwing a distance of 19.45m and in the weight throw with a toss of 21.09m, claiming first place in both events.
Nosa Ehimwenman (Jr., Flossmoor,Ill./Homewood Flossmoor) also fared well for the Buckeyes, taking first place in both the long jump and the triple jump. Ehimwenman won the long jump by posting a leap of 7.17 meters. In the triple jump Ehimwenman finished with a leap of 15.54 meters.
The women also received strong performances in the field events, receiving first-place finishes from high jumper Tami Smith (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Westland ), pole-vaulter Becky Heintz (Jr., Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and throwers Erin Carter (Sr., Logan,Ohio/Logan) and Keturah Lofton (Jr., Zanesville,Ohio/Zanesville).
In the running events the women fared well, placing first in four events, including the 4×400 meter relay, finishing in a time of 3:50.68. The men finished the event with five first place finishers.
Sprinter Joel Brown (Sr., Baltimore, Md/Woodlawn) captured three events – the 60-meter hurdles, the 200 meter dash and the 4×400 meter relay.

BECKY HEINTZ
Becky Heintz (Jr., Sidney, Ohio/ Sidney) posted another first place finishwith a leap of 11 feet 3 inches after breaking the school record in the pole-vault in the first meet of the season at the Buckeye Invitational
KRISTA KEIR
Krista Keir (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville) opened the 2003 indoor season by taking first place honors in the shot put at the Buckeye Invitational.
GREG NORMAN
Greg Norman (Jr., Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) broke the French Field House record in the 60 meter dash in a time of 6.88 seconds during the Buckeye Invitationl. Norman also took first place honors in the 60 meter dash at the Illinois Invitational.
TAMI SMITH
Tami Smith (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Westland) began her 2003 season by proviouslly qualifying for the 2003 NCAA championships in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet. Smith followed her first place finish at the Buckeye Duals with another first-place finish.
DAN TAYLOR
Dan Taylor (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) provisionally qualified for the 2003 NCAA track and field championships with a throw of 61 feet 10 inches in the first meet of the season. The following week at the Illinois Invitational, Taylor added to his list of collegiate honors by setting a new school record in the shot
TAYLOR OFF TO A FAST START
Ohio State junior thrower Dan Taylor earned Big Ten men’s track and field athlete of the week for the second consecutive week after posting a pair of first place finishes at the Illinois Invitational Invitational last Saturday.
Taylor, a 2002 indoor and outdoor All-American, won both the shot put and the weight throw. His throw of 19.45 meters in the shot put stands as the best throw in the nation. In the weight throw, Taylor broke the school record with a toss of 21.09 meters.
LOFTON JOINS FELLOW BUCKEYES SMITH AND TAYLOR
Keturah Lofton provisionally qualified for the 2003 NCAA championships in the weight throw at the Illinois Invitational. Lofton’s provisional qualification for the NCAA championships, Lofton joins fellow Buckeyes Tami Smith and Dan Taylor.
MEET COACH RUSS ROGERS
In his 15 years at Ohio State, Russ Rogers has produced more than 100 Big Ten indoor and outdoor track and field champions, 10 NCAA indoor and outdoor champions and 73 All-Americans. Rogers has more than 30 years of head coaching experience in national and international track and field. Rogers came to Ohio State from Fairleigh Dickinson University where he served as the head coach for men’s and women’s track and field as well as the cross country teams for 10 years.
OHIO STATE PLAYS HOSTS TO NCAA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The NCAA has announced that The Ohio State University has been awarded the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Regional Championships to be held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on May 30 and 31.
The championships are a two-day event that will feature over 900 collegiate athletes.
