No. 2 Men’s Gymnastics Takes First at Windy City Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team took first place at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill., Saturday with a score of 213.00. The margin of victory over second place Iowa was 4.25 points (208.75). Michigan placed third with 207.75 points. Though the Buckeyes did not place first in any individually events, the team won every event except for vault where they placed second behind Minnesota.
Randy Monahan (So./Elizabethtown, Pa.) placed first in the all-around competition by more than a point with a score of 53.20. Minnesota’s Guillermo Alverez came in second with a score of 52.20, followed by Jamey Houle (Jr./ Enfield, Conn.) who complied 51.75 points. Dick Huntwork (Sr./ Pickerington, Ohio) scored 49.80 points, which landed him in ninth place.
On floor exercise, Kerry Adderly (So./Orlando, Fla.) and Monahan tied for third with an average of 9.10 points. Houle’s 9.2 on Pommel Horse placed fourth. On still rings, Monahan and Matt Smith (Sr./Salt Lake City, Utah) both averaged 9.00 and placed third and fourth respectively, however, Smith stuck his dismount and rallied the team for the remainder of the rotations. Monahan averaged a 9.35 on vault and landed in third place. On parallel bars, Cody Trobaugh (So./Dallas, Texas) placed second with 8.80 points. Monahan placed third on horizontal bar with 9.00 points.
“No one got hurt, which always is a goal,” Miles Avery, head coach, said. “We have yet to get started. This team is further along that last years team was at this point. To win is a huge plus. The whole team was enthusiastic during the entire event and that really helped us. “For Randy and Jamey to do as well as they did in the first meet of the year proves how mature this team is. Matt Smith gave the team a big boost when he stuck his dismount on rings.”
