No. 10 Volleyball Defeats Kent State, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tenth-ranked Ohio State (3-2) used a 16-kill, 19 dig performance by Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) to capture the Buckeye Classic Championship with a 3-0 (34-32, 30-19, 30-17) win over Kent State (2-4) Gordon was named the Buckeye Classic Most Valuable Player for her efforts. Buckeye Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) added nine kills for Ohio State. Danielle Holt (Fr., Galion, Ohio) had a team-high eight kills for the Golden Flashes with Jennifer Dreyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding seven.
With game one tied at 13, a Buckeye service error and an ace serve by Dreyer put Kent State ahead, 15-13. A KSU service error cut the margin to 15-14. The Golden Flashes scored the next six points to take a 21-14 lead. The KSU run started with an Anne Butts (Fr., Bloomington, Ill.) kill and two OSU errors to take an 18-14 lead as OSU called time out. Kent State continued the scoring run with a Holt kill, an OSU error and an ace by Butts. Freshmen setter Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) entered the game for Ohio State and OSU produced a four-point run with two Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) kills, a Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) kill and an ace serve by Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) to cut the lead to 21-18 at Kent State called time out. A KSU kill by Ann Haber (So., Eaton, Ohio) stopped the run making it 22-18. Two kills by Gordon made it 22-20. A Buckeye error put KSU ahead, 23-20. Kills by Higgins and Stiling and an ace serve by Higgins tied the game at 23. The squads exchanged points to raise the score to 28-all. A Draeger ace serve set game point (29-28) for OSU. A Holt kill tied the game at 29. A Buckeye error made it 30-29, Kent State with the Golden Flashes serving game point. OSU tied the game at 29 off an error. A Gordon kill set game point at 30-29, OSU. A Michelle Corniffe (So., Ajax, Ontario) kill tied the game at 30. A Buckeye error set game point for Kent State at 31-30. OSU’s Gordon tied the game at 31 with a kill. Dreyer’s kill put KSU ahead 32-31 serving game point again. Gordon responded with a kill to tie the game at 32. A Kent State error made it 33-32, OSU. Gordon closed out the game with a kill, her ninth of the game) for a 34-32 win. Ohio State hit .160 for the game to .095 for Kent State. Game two was close early and showed a tie score at 18. A kill by Gordon, two from Stiling, back-to-back aces by Gordon and a KSU error opened a 24-18 Ohio State advantage. OSU maintained the lead and with a block by Andersson and Higgins ended the game at 30-19. The Buckeyes hit .242 for the game to .038 for Kent State.
Ohio State had several point runs in game three. The Buckeyes opened a seven-point lead (20-13) on an Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) kill. Ohio State held a 10-point lead (27-17) and closed out the game with three consecutive blocks. Draeger and Stiling combined for back-to-back blocks and Stiling and Gordon closed the match with a block at 30-17. Ohio State hit .167 for the game to -.143 for the Golden Flashes.
For the match Ohio State hit .186 while holding Kent State to .000. The Buckeyes had a 44-25 advantage in kills and recorded eight ace serves to two for Kent State. OSU gave up 15 service errors to 12 for Kent State. OSU had a 43-38 advantage in digs and outblocked the Golden Flashes 10-7.
Named to the All-Tournament team along with MVP Gordon were OSU’s Stephanie Higgins and Shelly Draeger. Joining the team were KSU’s Anne Butts and Jennifer Dreyer, Cleveland State’s Jamie Bouyer (So., Bedford Heights, Ohio) and Eastern Kentucky’s Marisa Kawa (Jr., Naperville, Ill.).
Cleveland State (3-3) captured the consolation match of the Classic with a 3-0 (30-20, 31-29, 30-23) win over Eastern Kentucky (0-5).
The Buckeyes will travel to Chicago to play Illinois-Chicago Tuesday, Sept. 10. OSU returns home for the Ohio State Invitational the following weekend. Friday’s semifinal matchups include Texas vs. Akron at 5 p.m. and Ohio State against Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m. The Saturday consolation match will be played in the Larkins Hall Exhibition Gym at noon. The championship match is scheduled for 8 p.m. in St. John Arena.
