No. 10 Volleyball Defeats Cleveland State 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tenth-ranked Ohio State (2-2) defeated Cleveland State (2-3) 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-28) in the second semifinal match of the Buckeye Classic Friday night in St. John Arena. Kent State (2-3) defeated Eastern Kentucky (0-4) 3-1 (22-30, 30-23, 30-21, 30-29) in the first semifinal match of the evening. The Buckeyes will face Kent State in the championship match Saturday at 7 p.m. while Cleveland State plays Eastern Kentucky in the consolation match at 5 p.m.
OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) scored match-highs of 16 kills and 15 digs for the Buckeyes. Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) and Shelly Drager (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) contributed eight kills each. Cleveland State’s Michelle Iafigliola (Sr., Mentor, Ohio) had team-highs 10 kills and 11 digs for the Vikings. Jamie Bouyer (So., Bedford Heights, Ohio) and Alisa Hatcher (Fr., Bellefontaine, Ohio) added seven kills each for Cleveland State.
Trailing 14-12, Cleveland State tied the game at 14 with a kill by Bouyer and an ace serve. Ohio State responded by scoring the next eight points to open a 22-14 lead. The run began with a CSU service error and then an ace serve by Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.). An OSU block by Draeger and Stiling and a Gordon kill caused Cleveland State to call time out at 18-14. The Buckeyes continued the run with another Gordon kill, a Virtue ace, a Stiling kill and another Draeger-Stiling block completed the run. OSU held the lead and with a Stiling kill closed out game one at 30-22. The Buckeyes hit .412 for the game to .111 for Cleveland State.
Game two saw 12 ties in the score, the last at 16 all off a CSU kill by Kelly Crain (So., Perrysburg, Ohio). Two Viking errors and a Gordon kill gave OSU a 19-16 lead. At 21-18, Buckeyes, a block by Gordon and Stiling and a CSU error made it 23-18, OSU. The Buckeyes maintained the lead and a Viking hitting error ended game two at 30-23. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to .154 for the Vikings. Cleveland State opened game three with a 4-0 run with an ace by Crain, a Bouyer kill, an OSU error and another Crain ace. With the Buckeyes trailing 24-21, A Draeger kill, a CSU error, an ace serve by Stiling and another Viking error gave OSU a 25-24 lead. A Hatcher kill tied the game at 25. A CSU ball handling error put OSU ahead, 26-25. A kill by OSU’s Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) gave Ohio State a 27-25 lead as Cleveland State called time out. CSU’s Anne Yost (Jr., London, Ohio) made it 27-26 with a kill and an OSU ball handling error tied the game at 27. A Buckeye hitting error gave Cleveland State a 28-27 lead. Higgins responded with a kill to tie the game at 28. A Viking error set match point at 29-28. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a Gordon kill for a 30-28 win. Ohio State hit .163 for the game to .132 for Cleveland State.
For the match Ohio State hit .291 to Cleveland State’s .135. The Buckeyes had a 47-35 advantage in kills. OSU had a 6-5 advantage in aces with CSU’s Crain collecting a match-high three. The Buckeyes served up 16 service errors to nine for the Vikings. Cleveland State had a 43-39 advantage in digs while the Buckeyes outblocked Cleveland State, seven to five. OSU’s Higgins had a match-high four assist blocks.
