COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (6-4, Big Ten 0-1) women’s volleyball team lost to unranked Indiana (11-2, 1-0) 3-1 (30-28, 30-26, 29-31, 30-21), in Bloomington, in the opening match of the Big Ten Conference. Buckeye Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) had a team-high 24 kills with Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) adding 10. Hoosier Melissa Brewer (Jr., Bloomington, Ind.) tied Gordon for match-high honors with 24 kills with Christina Archibald (So., Belleville, Ill.) adding 21 and Katie Pollom 12.
Ohio State currently has five players injured: outside hitter Maria Pongonis (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio), setter Katie Virtue (Sr., Charles, Ill.), setter Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), middle blocker Katherine Grant (Fr., Nashville, Tenn.) and outside hitter Anna Andersson (Sr., Angelholm, Sweden), including three starters, Pongonis, Virtue and Grant.
Indiana had a 74-57 advantage in kills and out hit the Buckeyes, .266-.231. Each squad had five ace serves with OSU’s Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and IU’s Archibald recording a match-high three aces each. The Buckeyes gave up 13 service errors to 12 for the Hoosiers. Indiana had a 61-52 advantage in digs with Hillary Toivonen (Sr., Muncie, Ind.) collecting a match-high 17 and teammate Nikki Hill (Jr., Muncie, Ind.) adding 10. OSU’s Draeger recorded a team-high 13 digs with Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 10. The Hoosiers edged OSU in blocks, 10-9. Brewer (0-5) and Archibald (1-4) recorded five blocks each for Indiana. OSU’s Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) also recorded five blocks (1-4) for the Buckeyes. IU’s Victoria Zimmerman (So., Barrington, Ill.) had 59 assists for the Hoosiers while OSU’s Whalen recorded 49. OSU continues on the road this week with a 7 p.m., Sat., Sept. 28 match at No. 9 Penn State (10-1).
