Whalen Sets No. 13 OSU To 3-1 Win Over Miami – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind the play of setter Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.), the 13th-ranked Ohio State (6-3) women’s volleyball team overcame a slow start to earn a 3-1 (29-31, 30-28, 30-24, 30-21) win over Miami (Ohio) (5-7), Wednesday night in St. John Arena. A former setter, Whalen had started in the libero position in five of the eight previous matches, but returned to the setter position because of injuries to Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.). Whalen, who started three matches and played the setter position in three other matches her freshman year, recorded 51 assists, 11 digs, three kills (.286) and an ace serve in the win over the RedHawks. Benefiting from her play was Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) who recorded match-highs of 29 kills and 20 digs. OSU’s Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) had 12 kills and Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) a career-high eight. Miami had four players score double-figure kills with Erika Eagan (Sr., Bloomington, Ill.), Kelly McCullough (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) and Tara Buroker (So., Bluffton, Ohio) recording 11 apiece and Susan Poll (Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) adding 10.
Game one started close and was tied at seven. An OSU error and blocks by Eagan and Poll and Eagan and Jennifer Eaton (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) opened a 10-7 RedHawk lead. OSU tied the game at 17 with a Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) kill. An OSU error and an Eagan kill returned the lead to Miami at 19-17. The RedHawks held a 27-23 lead, but two Miami errors cut the margin to 27-25. A Buckeye error made it 28-25, Miami. OSU’s Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) recorded a kill off her own dig and with a Miami error closed the lead to 28-27 as Miami called time out. An Eagan kill made it 29-27, with Miami serving game point. A Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) kill made it 29-28 and a Stiling kill tied the game at 29. Kills by McCullough and Buroker ended the game at 31-29 for Miami. Miami hit .333 for the game to .211 for Ohio State. From a two-all tie in game two, Miami took a 6-2 lead with two kills by Buroker, one from McCullough and an OSU error. The RedHawks held a five-point lead at 12-7 and maintained the lead. With Miami leading 28-26, kills by Stiling and Gordon tied the game at 28 as Miami called time out. Gordon’s next kill gave OSU a 29-28 lead and serving game point. Gordon’s 15th kill of the match closed the game at 30-28 for the Buckeyes, tying the match at one game each. OSU hit .316 for the game to .300 for Miami.
Tied at 11 in game three, a Miami error, a block by Stiling and Draeger and a Stiling kill gave OSU a 14-11 lead. Two Buckeye errors and a Megan Clark (Fr., Solon, Ohio) kill tied the game at 14. Tied at 15, a Stiling kill, a block by Gordon and Stiling and a RedHawk error put OSU ahead, 18-15. With OSU leading 21-18, a Buroker kill, two OSU errors and an ace serve by Eaton gave Miami a 22-21 lead at OSU called time out. A Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) kill tied the game at 22. McCullough responded with a kill to give Miami a 23-22 lead. A Buckeye kill by Miller tied the game at 23. Two RedHawk errors followed give OSU a 25-23 lead as Miami called time out. Ohio State continued scoring with kills from Miller and Stiling, an ace by Hagerty and a Gordon kill to reach game point at 29-23. A Buroker kill stopped the game point attempt at 29-24. OSU closed out the game at 30-24 with a Draeger kill. The Buckeyes hit .314 for the game to .206 for Miami.
Ohio State opened game four with a 3-0 run off a Miami error and two OSU blocks by Hagerty and Draeger. Two OSU errors and a Miami block by Poll and Buroker tied the game at three. Tied at six, the Buckeyes opened a 10-6 lead with a Miami error; two Gordon kills and an ace serve by Miller. At 12-8, two Miami errors gave the Buckeyes a six-point lead at 14-8. With a 24-18 margin, OSU’s Gordon scored on back-to-back ace serves to increase the lead to 26-18. Miami cut the lead to 26-19 with a Buroker kill. A Miller kill and a block by Stiling made it 28-19. The team’s exchanged hitting errors to reach match point for OSU at 29-20. A Buckeye error made it 29-21 but Miller’s kill ended the game at 30-21. OSU hit .053 for the game to -.036 for Miami.
For the match, Ohio State hit .221 to .217 for Miami. OSU had a 63-53 advantage in kills and a 9-4 margin in ace serves. The RedHawks gave up 14 service errors to 11 for Ohio State. Gordon served up a season-high three aces for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 56-42 advantage in digs with Gordon recording a season-high 20 and Whalen adding 11. Buroker had a team-high 11 digs for Miami. Ohio State out blocked the Redhawks, 11-5. OSU’s Stiling had a match-high five blocks with one solo and four assists.
Ohio State will travel to Indiana (7-2) Wed., Sept. 25 to open league play in the Big Ten Conference against the Hoosiers.
OSU Notes:
Stacey Gordon has recorded double-figure kill in her last 24 matches and in 38 of 40 matches in her career. She has had 14 matches with 20 or more kills. Gordon’s season-high 20 digs was her 25th double-figure digs match and she has had 24 double-double (kills-digs) matches.
Brie Hagerty played in her second match of the season. She had only seen brief action against UCLA. Hagerty had two kills, five digs, three assist blocks and an ace serve.
Anna Andersson played the libero position against Miami tonight. She had four digs and added a kill that came off an overpass dig.
Heather Whalen previously saw action at setter in her freshman season. She replaced an injured Katie Virtue at Marshall (17 assists). She also saw limited time at setter against Northwestern (11) and at Michigan (5). She started in place of Katie Virtue in road matches at Michigan State (49), Indiana (54) and Penn State (38). OSU won the match at Indiana and lost to Michigan State and Penn State.
