Columbus, Ohio – Three men’s gymnasts will represent Ohio State at the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships Wednesday and Friday at Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Buckeyes Randy Monahan (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Kerry Adderly (So., Orlando, Fla.) will join former Ohio State gymnast Blaine Wilson (Team Chevron, Columbus, Ohio) at the competition.
The men’s senior event finals and all-around preliminaries will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday with the all-around finals at 7 p.m. Friday.
The national champions for both the all-around and individual events will be decided at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. The Top 10 all-around competitors after the two days automatically make the 2002-2003 Senior National Team and will represent the U.S. in international competition for the next year. Four gymnasts will be added to the national team by the men’s program committee. The event also serves as a qualifier to the 2002 Individual World Championships, which are Nov. 20-24, in Debrecen, Hungary.
Wilson topped the qualifier standings at the 2002 Men’s National Qualifying Competition with a triumphant comeback in his first meet in over a year. Wilson won five national championships in a row (1996-2000) before shoulder surgery kept him out of competition for the 2001 USA Gymnastics Championships. Adderly and Monahan joined the list of 33 gymnasts that qualified at the national qualifying competition.
Ohio State’s Raj Bhavsar (Jr., Houston, Texas), 2002 All-Around NCAA Champion and current national team member, is recovering from shoulder surgery and will not compete this year.
