HONOLULU, Hawaii – Ninth-ranked Ohio State (1-1) overcame a Colorado (0-2) comeback to defeat the No. 21 Buffaloes 3-2 (32-30, 31-21, 26, 30, 21-30, 15-11). OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) pounded down 29 kills and added 16 digs, Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) contributed 13 kills and Maria Pongonis (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) added a career-high 11 kills for the Buckeyes. Colorado’s Kim Taskey (Sr., Portage, Mich.) scored a team-high 15 kills and added a match-high 17 digs with Monique Gerlach (Jr., Monarch Beach, Calif.) adding 12 kills and Drew Hays (Fr., Amarillo, Texas), 11.
Colorado held the early lead in game one before a Buffalo service error tied the game at 11. A dig-to-kill by libero Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich) and a service ace by Pongonis put OSU ahead, 13-11. Colorado tied the game at 14 with a block by Meghan Barkman (Sr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Taskey. A Gerlach ace serve and two OSU errors gave Colorado a 17-14 lead. A kill by Gordon, an ace by Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and a Buffalo error tied the game at 17. Tied at 19, two OSU errors opened a 21-19 Colorado lead. Two Colorado errors tied the game at 21. After nine more ties, with the match at 30-all, back-to-back kills by Gordon closed out the game at 32-30. The Buckeyes hit .216 for the game collecting 22 kills. Colorado hit .256 with 12 kills.
Game two saw kills by Gordon and Pongonis break a nine-all tie to give Ohio State the lead. With OSU leading 16-14, a block by Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) and two Colorado errors gave the Buckeyes a 19-14 lead. After service errors by both teams made the score 21-19, a Gordon kill, a Miller ace and a Colorado error put OSU ahead, 23-15. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a block by Higgins and Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) closed out the game at 30-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .500 in the game on 17 kills while Colorado hit .107 with 10 kills.
Game three saw the Buckeyes break a five-all tie, scoring five consecutive points to take a 10-5 lead. OSU built the lead with a Draeger ace, two Colorado errors and two Gordon kills. The Buckeyes held a 22-17 lead before Colorado scored six unanswered points to take a 23-22 lead. A Stiling kill tied the game at 23. Colorado went ahead with a Hays kill at 24-23. OSU’s Miller tied the game with a kill at 24. After exchanging service errors a Buckeye attack error gave Colorado a 26-25 lead. Two Taskey kills gave Colorado a 28-25 lead. A Gordon kill cut the Colorado lead to 28-26. An OSU service error and a Colorado kill by Elizabeth Gower (Sr., Naperville, Ill.) closed out the game for a 30-26 Buffalo win. Colorado hit .233 for the game with 13 kills. OSU hit .140 on 16 kills.
Game four saw nine ties, the last at 18-all. Colorado ran the next four points with an OSU hitting error, two kills by Gerlach and a block by Gower and Gerlach to take a 22-18 lead. A Buffalo service error cut the lead to 22-19. A Gerlach kill and an ace serve gave Colorado a 24-19 lead. The teams exchanged service errors and a kill by Barkman opened a 26-20 Colorado lead. A Stiling kill cut the lead to 26-21, but a Hays kill, two OSU errors and a block by Barkman ended the game at 30-21, tying the match at two games each. Colorado hit .270 for the game on 14 kills. The Buckeyes hit .068 with 12 kills.
Game five opened with a Virtue ace serve but her service error tied the game at one. A block by Nicole Carr (Fr., Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Gerlach and a kill by Carr put Colorado ahead 3-1. A Colorado attack error made it 3-2, Colorado. A kill by Gerlach and a Buffalo error moved the score to 4-3. Kills by Taskey and Gordon made it 5-4. Barkman and Gordon recorded kills to make it 6-5. An Colorado attack error tied the game at six. OSU kills by Pongonis, Stiling and Virtue and a Colorado attack error opened a 10-6 Buckeye lead. Colorado responded with three points off an OSU service error, a Carr kill and a Taskey ace serve to cut the lead to 10-9. Taskey’s service error made it 11-9. Back-to-back ace serves by OSU’s Stiling opened a 13-9 Ohio State lead. Colorado cut the lead to 13-10 with an Allie Griffin (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) kill. An OSU kill by Pongonis made it 14-10 with OSU serving match point. A Gerlach kill stopped the match point making the score 14-11. A Colorado attack error ended the game at 15-11 for Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes a 3-2 win.
For the match, Colorado hit .214 for the match to .213 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 73-56 advantage in kills and outserved Colorado, 11 to six. OSU recorded 24 service errors to 14 for Colorado. Defensively OSU was outdug 67 to 59 and outblocked 13 to four.
Ohio State will face No. 11 UCLA (1-0) at 3 p.m. (9 p.m. EDT) Sunday to conclude play in the tournament.
Buckeye Notes:
* Stacey Gordon’s 29 kills was one short of her career high of 30 set at Purdue in 2001. The 29 kills extended her double-figure kill streak to 18 matches. She has scored double-figure kills in 21 of 33 matches in her career. Her 16 kills was her ninth consecutive double-figure dig match and her ninth consecutive double-double match. It was her 10th match with 20 or more kills.
* Heather Whalen recorded a career-high 16 digs in the match. Her previous high was 14 at Indiana in 2000. Whalen, playing the libero position, converted one of her digs to a kill when the overpass was not played by Colorado.
* Maria Pongonis had career-highs of 11 kills and seven digs against Colorado. She had nine kills and six digs in her first match against Hawaii.
