Men’s Soccer Edged By Bearcats In Final Minutes, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s soccer team dropped a tough match today to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 3-2 at Meyers Field in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cincinnati freshman Matt Hessel scored from 30 yards out in the 85th minute to lift the Bearcats to victory. The loss drops the Buckeyes to 0-2 on the exhibition season.
Cincinnati got on the board first nine minutes into the game when Josh Liersemann headed a cross from Scott Lyons into the goal. Senior Andy Rosenband (Sr., Hammond, Ind.) tied the game at one with a goal from the top of the penalty box.
Lyons opened the scoring in the second half when he deflected a shot taken by sophomore Josh Gardner past goalkeeper Chad Brown (So., Rockford, Ill.). Gardner was credited with the assist. The Buckeyes tied the game again with six minutes remaining when freshman Kevin Nugent (Fr., Centerville, Ohio) knocked in a rebound past UC goalkeeper John Adams. The Bearcats didn’t waste anytime as Hessel scored the unassisted game-winning goal one minute later.
The Buckeyes will open the regular season at home this Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. against East Carolina at the Scarlet and Gray Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. For tickets call 1-800 GO BUCKS or go to www.hangonsloopy.com.
