COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s tennis senior Sadhaf Pervez (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) claimed the singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships, presented by the U.S. Tennis Association, in Bloomington, Ind., Tuesday. With the win Pervez receives a wild card into the Riviera Women’s All-American Championships, the first national tournament of the 2002-03 NCAA season.
In the final, Pervez, a No. 5-8 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 9-12 seed Jessica Ferguson of Tyler (Texas) Junior College (who will attend LSU in January) in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Pervez upset top-seed Jenny McGaffigan of Illinois in the semifinals and topped No. 3 Cassie Haas of Iowa in the quarterfinals.
A number of other Buckeyes competed in the tournament as well. Erica Fisk (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), the No. 2-seed in the tourney, was upset by eventual runner-up Ferguson of LSU in the Round of 16.
OSU’s Lindsay Williams (Jr., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) won her first-round match against Kristen Clary of Xavier before falling in the Round of 32 in a match tiebreaker to Kelly Baritot of Texas, while Meaghan Colville (Jr., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) beat Iowa’s Jenny Schulte in the opening round in a match tie-breaker before losing to Illinois’ Eldina Fazlic in the Round of 32. Lindsey Adams (So., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) posted a win over Jessica Groth of Indiana in the opening round, but fell to William & Mary’s Nina Camp in the Round of 32. Taryn Bowen (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was defeated in the first round by Kate Williams of Penn. In doubles, the duo of Fisk and Colville was defeated in the semifinals by eventual-winners Jenny McGaffigan (Illinois) and Kathleen McGaffigan (Wisconsin), while the tandem of Pervez and Williams reached the quarterfinals before falling to the McGaffigan sisters. Adams and Bowen were defeated in the quarterfinals by Indiana’s top-ranked tandem of Karie Schlukebir and Linday Tran.
The ITA National Summer Championships began in 1994 and are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit. The event features amateur players from throughout the country. It is made up of five regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and West) for collegiate players as well as the general public. Each region consists of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July. Each summer the summer circuit provides nearly 2,000 college and junior level players the opportunity to play.
