COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team held its annual awards banquet at the OSU Golf Course May 31 to celebrate the conclusion of another outstanding season.
The squad, under head coach Chuck Merzbacher, went 19-7 overall, setting the program record for wins in a season, and finished third in the Big Ten Conference. In addition, the team qualified for the NCAA team championship for the fourth consecutive season, while Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West) received an at-large berth to the NCAA singles tournament.
Rincon, who ended her career season all-time at Ohio State in singles wins with 101, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2002 squad. She led the team with 25 singles wins while playing at the No. 1 position. Rincon was ranked among the nation’s best players throughout the season and ended the year at No. 68. She earned All-Big Ten honors for the third consecutive season and earned two ITA Midwest Region awards – the Arthur Ashe, Jr., award and the Senior award. A standout in the classroom as well, Rincon was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was named to the Verizon Academic All-District Third Team.
Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) was named the team’s most improved player and shared the Coaches Award with Lindsey Adams (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island). Williams was 21-9 this season, including a mark of 16-4 at No. 5 singles. She led the team with a 9-1 record in conference play. Adams went 9-7 on the season, including 4-2 in dual matches, in her first season with the team.
Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) received the Buckeye Power Club award. The award is given by the strength and conditioning staff, based on who they felt best exemplified certain qualities in the weight room. The criteria include leadership ability, work ethic, winning attitude, attendance and above average ability to follow instructions. Each athlete chosen is eligible for National Strength and Conditioning All America honors next year.
